Fannie Wong Obituary

Fannie Wong
July 28, 1916 - March 14, 2021
Sacramento, California - At the age of 104, Fannie Foey Wong passed away peacefully at her home in Sacramento, CA on March 14, 2021. She was born on July 28, 1916 in Red Bluff, CA. Fannie was the fourth of fourteen children, including an identical twin sister.
Part of a fun-loving family, Fannie and her twin sister, Annie, mischievously traded places during classes. The duo sang and played guitar on the local radio station. Fannie and her siblings formed girl versus boy teams and competitively trounced each other. Fannie graduated from Red Bluff High School, and, after a brief time in Redding, moved to Sacramento.
While waitressing at iconic Frank Fat's restaurant, Fannie met Gene Wong, and they soon married. While Gene fought in WWII, Fannie gave birth to the first of their five children. Her utmost joy in life was spending time with her family.
Deeply curious, Fannie explored a variety of interests. She lifeguarded and auditioned to perform in the Ice Follies. An excellent seamstress, Fannie outfitted herself and her daughters in the most fashionable clothes of the day. She played a good game of tennis and won many golf tournaments. At the age of 58, Fannie proudly earned a bachelor's degree in social science from Sacramento State University. Always athletic, she took up skiing with her youngest daughter at the age of 59 and became an excellent intermediate skier in her sixties. Fannie enjoyed an eclectic range of community classes including ceramics, Chinese calligraphy, watercolor, hula, line dancing, and computer lessons.
Fannie traveled extensively and brought her children and grandchildren with her. Together, her family toured the US, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Asia, Europe, and South America. At 93, she hiked the hilly terrain to the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge in Ireland. At 98, she happily swam with stingrays. At 101, she enthusiastically sampled taco stands in Mexico.
Fannie is preceded in death by her son Darrell Wong; her husband Gene Wong; her sisters Lily Mason, Pearl Jone, Annie Wong, and Helen Louis; and her brothers Sam Foey, Albert Foey, Edward Foey, Herbert Foey, David Foey, Frank Foey, and Henry Foey. She leaves behind her sister Brenda Foey; her children Ginger Jue, Valerie Wong, Gary Wong, and Gayle Lee; and seven grandchildren.
The family would like to thank all of Fannie's caregivers, especially Marilou Pinheiro and Tima Vuidreketi who took such good care of Fannie during her final years.
A private interment service will be held at East Lawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Fannie to the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation at 9040 High Tech Court, Elk Grove, CA 95758.

I had the pleasure of treating Fannie in our medical office. I had to do a double take at her chart as I couldn’t believe she was truly 101 at that time. She hopped up onto the exam table like someone in their 50’s! She was a joy and will be missed. Condolences to her family.

Few people could keep up with Fannie even in her advanced age. She was an avid ice-skater, tennis player, skier, dancer, and world traveler. She was never considered “elderly” as she was always very active even entering her later years. Even though she was in her late 90’s, she had a great appetite, as she could devour steak the size of her head! But she always remained petite. And in her 90’s she was still jetting off to Hawaii. She had 3 to daughters and a son who were always there for her even though they knew how strong and independent she was throughout the years. She will be missed by many.

She had a great appetite and could be seen devouring a steak bigger than her head, in her late 90’s. Bur she always remained petite. She had 3 daughters and a son who were always there for her even though they knew how strong and independent she was. She will be missed by many who loved her very much.
