Frederick Van Bergen Meyer

Frederick Meyer Obituary

MEYER, Frederick
Van Bergen
Passed away in Sutter Hospital, Sacramento, on August 29, 2004, at the age of 59 after a courageous battle with cancer. "Van," as he was known, was born on July 28, 1945, in Sacramento and grew up in Walnut Grove. He lived his entire life in the Sacramento Area. He attended Beaver Union Grammar School and graduated from Walnut Grove Elementary School and Courtland High School. He also attended Foothill College. He worked for the Home Insurance Company in San Francisco and following the death of his father, Fred Meyer, in 1968, he became a partner in Brown and Meyer Insurance in Walnut Grove. He ran the business for 36 years until his death. During those years the business grew dramatically due to the excellent relationships Van had with his clients. He was well respected by those who considered him both a trusted associate and - more importantly - a friend. He was also known by his friends and family as a quiet philanthropist. He was a member of the Rotary Club in Walnut Grove and had served as their president. He was a member of both St. Anthony Catholic Church in Walnut Grove and St. Anthony in Sacramento. He had served as an alter boy in Walnut Grove. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Frederick and Josephine Meyer and his sister, Patricia Meyer Ewing. He is survived by his daughter, Molly Meyer Hein of Chico and her husband, John, and his fiancee, Julie Santos, of Walnut Grove. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Waring (Clint), of Granite Bay and his brother, Joe Meyer (Liz), of Sacramento. Family and friends are invited to attend a mass of Christian burial on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at 10:00 AM at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Walnut Grove. Arrangements are being handled by C.E. Stewart Chapel in Rio Vista. There will be a private burial in Rio Vista. Remembrances are requested to be made to the American Cancer Society.

Van and I were childhood friends and classmates from Kindergarten through high school. Many hours were spent in sports, boy scouts and just being buddies. Van was the topic of one of my Kruses Muses published in San Diego two years ago. I had lunch with Van little over a year ago-remembering the good old days in Walnut Grove. God Bless you, Van. Rest in peace, my friend.
