Gary Myerscough Obituary

Live life and don't just exist..... Gary Myerscough was an elegant and charming man, though some would also say irascible. He was compassionate and empathetic; the voice of reason and totally unreasonable when grumpy ... because Mad Hatters get that way. Gary had an innate sense of what was right and proper and would mince no words when correcting you. He was, after all, an Eagle Scout and friend to Queen Betty of England. From the ever present Manhattan, fine wine, gourmet food, and international travel, to the annual Oscar party that was the event to see and be seen at, Gary was a connoisseur of style and grace. He was witty and humorous, and all who knew him can recite at least one "Garyism. " Though Gary despised being ill, even at the end, he entertained all who came to visit, giving us one last laugh, or one last pearl of wisdom. Beyond all, however, was Gary's love for Will, his husband and partner for 26 glorious years. One of Gary's most crowning achievements was in October, 2015, when he married the love of his life in a simple but oh so beautiful ceremony on the beach at Hanalei Bay. This was an event to behold, as everyone knew that Gary hated sand! There is a hole in this world now that Gary is gone and we all just simply miss him. A Mass will be held at St. Ignatius in Sacramento on December 9, 2017 at 12 noon. A Celebration of Life wilI be held later this Spring by invitation. If you don't get invited, Gary probably wouldn't have wanted you there anyway. So here's to champagne, smart conversation and family and friends.... Keep calm and Gary on.

We became friends as American History scholars and secret-radical, '60s student activists at Regis College, and fate brought us together again in Sacramento, late in life. Thank you, Gary, for sharing your mind, joy and spirit. Rest well.

Truly a wonderful man who taught me a lot over the 40 years I knew him. Our first meeting with when he was running the Sandy Smoley campaign for congress. It has been a long and wonderful road. I miss him. My best to will, who loved him for 26 wonderful years.

Ah Gary: ever erudite and elegant. Also, the most resilient person we have ever known. Knowing you has been such a blessing, we will miss you, but know you are always with us - especially at the Fourth of July.
