Helen BRADFIELD Obituary

BRADFIELD, Helen Haynes
On November 6, 2009, Helen Haynes Bradfield died at The Chateau at River's Edge in Sacramento. She was born in Belton, Texas, on August 2, 1917. Because of her father's career with the U.S. Immigration Service, her childhood was spent in many different places, including Denmark, which she recalled as her favorite years. She met and married Jim Bradfield at the University of Chicago prior to World War II. After starting a family, they settled in Sacramento where her husband Jim was one of the founding members of Sacramento State University. Jim passed away in 2002. Helen resided in Sacramento for 60 years, and grew to love everything California. Her many interests included the The League of Women Voters, where she served as secretary, the Sierra Club, The Renaissance Society, just to name a few. She was an avid world traveler with a keen interest in other cultures, journeying to China, Nepal, India and many countries in Europe. She was among the first Americans to lead tours to China, through her association with the Chinese/ American Friendship Committee. She is survived by her five children, Kathy Norton, Chris Bradfield, Robin Bradfield, Polly Washington, all residing in California, Susan Fuller in Kansas City, 13 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, and many friends and associates. The family would like to thank The Chateau at River's Edge for their care and companionship over the last eight years of her life. The family would also like to thank Sacramento Hospice for their care in the final weeks of her life. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at The Unitarian Universalist Society, 2223 Sierra Blvd., December 12, at 3:00 p.m., with reception following. Remembrances may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Society, Sacramento Hospice or organization of choice.
