Herman Chan Obituary

CHAN, Herman
Passed peacefully at home with his wife and sons present after a short battle with cancer on Thursday, July 27, 2006. He was born on December 4, 1931, in San Francisco, Calif., and is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Lois Chan, their two sons, Curtis (Dot) and Bryant (Dixie), and granddaughter Christi. Shortly after being born, Herman and his parents relocated to the Sacramento area, where he spent the remainder of his life. Herman was a graduate of Sacramento High School and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Upon being discharged from the Navy, Herman enrolled in automotive school where upon graduation he was hired by Oxford/British Motors to work on British import vehicles. Also, during this time, Herman enjoyed being a member of a pit crew for local sport car racers. After being a mechanic with Oxford/British Motors, Herman hired on with Mel Rapton. Herman enjoyed the practice of Tae Kwon Do, where he attained the prominent rank of Third Degree Black Belt. Also during his life, Herman was an avid fisherman where he taught his two sons the basics of fishing on the Sacramento River and ocean. After leaving Mel Rapton, Herman became a travel agent where he enjoyed scheduling long range fishing trips with clients and friends. His last fishing trip with close friends took place eight days before he passed. Herman was well liked by his fishing clients and friends. You are invited to attend the wake on Friday, August 4, 7:00-8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 5, at 2:00 PM. Both services will be held at GEORGE KLUMPP CHAPEL OF FLOWERS, 2691 Riverside Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95818. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in memory of Herman to American Cancer Society.

I am very sorry for your loss. Mr. Chan was a 3rd Dan when I began training a the United Martial Arts College under Master Kang. His strength and discipline was an example to us all. I still remember hearing stories about him removing lug nuts with his bare hands that others couldn't move with a wrench. Again my sympathies go out to your family.

Dear Curtis and Bryant,

My deepest sympathies on the passing of your Father. He was a very special man. You are fortunate to have such a great Dad. Herman and I trained often together. He trained hard and was a fierce competitor. I have many dents in my shins from his rock hard arm blocks. His double palm brick breaks were fantastic. He had the smoothest approach and made it look so easy.

May the Lord be your peace and provide you comfort.

Although I did not know Herman, I heard of him often through his daughter-in-law Dixie. His obituary captures the essence of a nice man, father and husband.

WE TRAINED, TESTED AND INSTRUCTED TOGETHER FOR YEARS AT MASTER KANGS TAE KWON DO MARTIAL ART COLLEGE. HERMAN EXCELLED WITH THE THE SHORT STICK & LONG STICK. HE SPECIALIZED IN BREAKING BRICKS WITH THE HEAL OF HIS FOOT. I REMEMBER THE FUN TIMES TOGETHER DOING THE DEMONSTRATIONS AT THE STATE FAIR. I WILL MISS YOU MY BROTHER, GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY (LOIS, CURTIS AND BRYANT).

I knew Herman from Tae Kwon Do. He was one of my first instructors when I joined some 20 years ago. His classes were tough and well taught. He gave me the first impression of the discipline that is required to suceed at martial arts. I will not forget his teachings and his good character.
