Herzl Friedlander Obituary

FRIEDLANDER, M.D., Herzl
Herzl Friedlander, a resident of Sacramento for 56 years and a prominent physician, died peacefully on January 28, 2006. Born in Orange, New Jersey to Philip and Eva Friedlander on January 30, 1915, Dr. Friedlander and his siblings, Judith and Saul, lived in Chicago, IL and Tucson, AZ. Having put himself through college while working to support his family, Dr. Friedlander obtained his B.S. in Zoology from University of Arizona in 1938, a Master's Degree in Chemistry from the University of Colorado, and attended medical school at the University of Colorado, where he graduated in 1944. As a Captain in the U.S. Army, Dr. Friedlander served as a physician in Korea from 1945-1947. He met his wonderful wife of 57 years, Betty, an R.N., during his residency at the V.A. Hospital in West Los Angeles. After obtaining his Board Certification in Internal Medicine, Dr. and Mrs. Friedlander moved to Sacramento, where he practiced for over three decades. Prior to his retirement in 1981, Dr. Friedlander was deeply devoted to his patients and family. A generous donor to Zionist causes, a student and patron of the arts, and an avid reader, he was a true humanitarian. Dr. Friedlander is survived by his wife, Betty Friedlander; their four children, Debbie Brans, Daniel Friedlander, Leah Hencier and Michael Friedlander, M.D.; and eight grandchildren, Rebekah Spurgeon, Jacqueline Brans, Susan Brans, Cyrus Friedlander, Hana Friedlander, Rachel Friedlander, David Friedlander & Thomas Friedlander. He is also survived by his brother, Saul Friedlander. Herzl Friedlander was laid to rest in Sacramento on his 91st birthday, January 30, 2006.

I'd like to extend my condolences to the Friedlander family for your loss. My husband, Alex Sabbadini was a dear friend to Dr. and Mrs. Friedlander. The article in the newspaper was printed right next to my Mother's notice as well. I am very familiar with what loss means to a family at this time. My sympathies to you, Mandy Sabbadini.

He gave us strength, he gave us love. He tucked us in, he taught us morals. Papa, you will be missed by all. You left me to be the only lefty in the family....and the next generations will be honored to get that from you. We, your grandchildren, are who we are because of you. It shows you were successful for many generations and will be for many to come. I can only hope I live on your legacy proudly, for you are our past and will always be our future. Until I see you again.....

Your granddaughter,

My deepest condolences to his family on the passing of Dr. Herzl Friedlander. He was my doctor when I first moved to Sacramento in 1962 and until his retirement. I attended his retirement party at the Sacramento Inn and wished him well. He was a fine physician and wonderful man.
