Isabelle Mary Burg Cox

Isabelle, age 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep in Granite Bay, CA on December 24, 2017. She is survived by her son-in-law, Herb Mathay (Melodee), daughter-in-law, Peggy Cox, stepdaughter, Sally Mayberry, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband O.B. Cox, her daughter Judith A. Mathay, her son Thomas B. Cox, and her five siblings, Kenneth, Lorraine, Lucille, Delores and Imogene. Isabelle was truly one of the "Greatest Generation" - selfless, hardworking, loyal, uncomplaining, cheerful, accepting, loving, and with very simple needs. She was gentle and kind to her family and to all with whom she worked and shared her time. She had the most beautiful smile and positive spirit! Born to Henry and Emma Burg on December 17, 1920 in Browns Valley, Minnesota, she grew up on a farm with her five siblings. After high school graduation, she attended business school in Minneapolis, and after WWII broke out, she moved to Washington D.C. to work for Western Union. There she met and married O.B. In 1944, they moved to Oakland, where Judi and Tom were born, and eventually they made a permanent home in Sacramento. Isabelle worked at McClellan AFB for twenty plus years, retiring in 1982. Her biggest joy in life was the time spent with her family members and dear friends. There will be a Celebration of Isabelle's Life on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at 11 am in St. Francis Hall at East Lawn Mortuary, 5757 Greenback Lane, Sacramento, CA. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to your favorite charity.
