I know this is a belated note but I want you to know what a difference Col. Schales made in my life. He fostered such confidence in his students and saw their potential and helped them navigate life and look to the future. I became a Registered Nurse which I truly would have never happened with out Colonel Schales and Sgt Babbs leadership and the confidence they instilled in a shy student with no direction. Colonel and Sgts legacy lives on thru many of their students.

I apologize for the late entry. I was just speaking with past students in Col. Schales AFJROTC class at Modesto HS in the mid to late '70's and early 80's.
Our condolences to a family man, Great Airmen, Teacher, mentor and friend to so many past students. Personally, Col Schales was always there for me and his students no matter if it was about school, the Air Force, or our family lives. He made attending his and MSgt Babbs class fun, and interesting. My senior year in '78, me and 2 friends enlisted and served in the AF. Col Schales went to the Recruiting office with us, drove to Modesto to see us off for BT as we departed Modesto. Several times, I received letters from Col Schales during BT and the Security Police Academy. It was his mentorship that drew us to a career in the AF and I will always be grateful to him for always being there for me, for his long talks, his letters, and his friendship. RIP Colonel, your watch is over we will always have your 6 as you always had ours. You will always be remembered and never forgotten.

My brother, J.D. Schales was a wonderful brothHe was third to the oldest of our family of 11. I am the baby. i was 6 years old when he married. When he would come home he would get his model A out of storage and it had a rumble seat in it he would take my sister and I for ride in it. He was always good to us. He would come home for reunions and would love seeing his parents, brothers, sisters, nieces & nephews. He will be missed. Everyone loved him.

Uncle J.D. was such a sweet man. It's hard to believe we have lost so many Uncles so quickly in so many months. He has many brothers and a sister, his Parents waiting to welcome him to Heaven. Rest in peace sweet Uncle J.D.
