James Albertson Obituary

A brilliant artist from early in life, James Albertson was known for his narrative paintings that pushed the boundaries of taboo subjects and humor in art. Jim earned a BFA from the Institute of Art, Chicago, 1966 and an MFA from CCA, Oakland in 1968. Twice he was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, 1980, 1983, and took part in the historical 1978 "Bad Painting" exhibit at the New Museum in NY. Jim taught art from his studio, as well as teaching stints at SFSU, CCAC, Merritt CC, Academy of Art, SF, CSUS and for many years with the Calif. Arts in Corrections program. Jim was employed by both Sierra and American River Colleges in Northern Calif. when he died this last July 2015. Join Jim's wife, Julia Stagg at his Memorial Celebration: Aug. 23 at the Verge Center for the Art, 625 S Street, SAC. 4-6pm. Remembrances can be made to Fenix Drum and Dance Company, 2110 Del Paso Blvd, Sacramento.

I knew Jim briefly in the 1980,s. I enjoyed the whimsical aspects of the art I was shown.
