James Moorefield Obituary

James Moorefield
September 29, 1936 - May 17, 2022
Sacramento, California - Moorefield, James McCreay passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 17, 2022. He was 85 years of age. He was born in New York City, September 29, 1936. In 1957, he graduated from Georgetown University. After being awarded the Regents Scholarship from the state of New York, he received his medical training at SUNY Downstate Medical School. He went on to serve as a medical officer in the US Navy, aboard the nuclear submarine USS Daniel Boone. Afterwards, he did his Radiology residency at the University of California, San Francisco. In 1969, he entered private practice with the Sacramento Radiology Medical Group, where he practiced medicine until his retirement in 2017.
Dr. Moorefield's local and state involvement as delegate and councilor from California provided him his first opportunities to distinguish himself in the politics of medicine. He later served as chairman and president of the American College of Radiology, working with members of the U.S. Congress to develop the relative value scale for radiology used by Medicare to this day. In 1997, he was awarded the profession's highest honor, the Gold Medal.
James is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen (Flatley); his siblings, Dorrine (McEntee) Robert, and Diane (Flynn); his children Beth, Kristin (Simpers), and Jennifer; his son-in-law John Mergen, and granddaughter, Clare Mergen. He was pre-deceased by his parents, James and Marie, and his son-in-law, Thomas Simpers.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on 11a.m. on June 9th at Sacred Heart Church (1040 39th Street, Sacramento), followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery (7101 Verner Avenue, Citrus Heights). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in James's memory to The James M. Moorefield Fellowship for Economics and Public Policy at American College of Radiology.

I worked for Dr Moorefield at Mercy Folsom as an x ray tech. I always found him even tempered and a pleasure to work with....and very funny at times. I have cancer, so I hope I see him on the other side. Bless his heart and bless his family.

Dear Helen, family and friends of James',
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at James' passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Daniel Boone (SSBN-629).
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
Helen and family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
Jim Sandman, FTC(SS) Ret,
National Chaplain, USSVI.

Some of my favorite memories are times Fred and I spent with Jim and Helen. Jim´s infectious laugh, his nimble mind, and deep curiosity made being with him always fun. My thoughts and love go out to Helen, Beth, Kristin, Jenny, and the family. Jim will be greatly missed by so many. May his memory be for a blessing.
