Jay Peterson Obituary

Sad to say, on May 11th, lung cancer took the life of former Little Charlie and the Nightcats bassist, Jay Peterson. Jay was born 8/17/1952 in Oakland, CA and passed away in his Sacramento home. Over the course of his music career, Jay worked with such notables as Chuck Berry, Otis Rush and Charlie Musselwhite and local luminaries like Johnny "Guitar" Knox and more recently, Kyle Rowland. Jay's professionalism and showmanship were instrumental in taking Little Charlie and the Nightcats from working the local bar scene to being signed by Alligator records and touring the world. Jay fought and conquered some serious health issues and had really been thriving the past few years until the cancer got him. He will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, in often repeated quotes - the products of his unique sense of humor and his unmistakable wit. Jay will be greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to call him friend. Jay Peterson was truly, one of a kind. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of many happy years, Jackie, and is survived by his sister, Vicki of Denver, CO. There will be a celebration of Jay's life on Sun., June 18, 1:30pm-3:30pm in the Garden Room of Sierra 2 Center, 2791 24th Street, Sacramento.

Just heard about Jays death. He was a good man, and a good friend.

Looks like I've been away from Sacramento too long. I didn't know that either Jackie or Jay passed away. She and I were buddies back in the Little Charlie days. And it's weird-I was just thinking about Jay TODAY and one of the last times I crossed paths with him. I'm not a music critic nor an accomplished writer, so I don't have anything dramatic or spell binding to say. I remember giving Jackie a ride to a Little Charlie gig in San Francisco. We were sitting in the dressing room. All the guys were really wound up tight because a record producer or an agent was supposed to be in the audience that night (forgive me it's been a long time). All except Jay. He was just kind of taking it all in, warming up, and chatting. They played the first few songs very quickly. Jay leaned over to Dobie (sp?) during a bridge to one of the songs and said "Let's establish some rhythm here". So instead of Dobie setting the beat, Jay did and Dobie followed along. The rest fell into place and the boys took off. They relaxed and put on a great show. Jay was always smooth that way. Bless you Jay and Jackie. It's been way too long.

I met Jay in 1970 when we both used the same rehearsal studio down the street from Leo's Music in Oakland. We formed a blues trio and being 18 and 19 years old we set about working to become professional musicians. I will never forget the times we had and how glad I was when Jay came back to the Bay Area from Chicago. It was my great pleasure to introduce Jay around the Oakland scene. I will never forget Jay's humor caring. Smooth sailing my brother.
