Lance CORCORAN Obituary

CORCORAN, Lance Christy
Beloved father, son, brother, uncle, fiance and friend passed away on Sunday, February 27, 2011. After fighting for almost a month, defying many odds, while showing us his strength and warrior spirit, his heart finally gave out.

Lance was born in Sacramento on October 28, 1963. He spent most of his childhood in Fair Oaks, California with his parents and three siblings. The first glimmer of the man Lance would become would soon be evident during his years at Bella Vista High School. As number 51, Lance was the center for the Broncos football team and he served both as Jr. Class Vice President and Sr. Class President before graduating in 1982. He also became involved with the drama club, sparked by his enthusiasm at the school's pep rallies. Lance went on to attend Sierra College in Rocklin where he studied theater arts.

In 1986, Lance began his career as a correctional officer for the State of California in Susanville. Lance served the California Correctional Peace Officers Association chapter president at the California Correctional Center. Lance reached new career heights when he was elected as the California Correctional Peace Officers Association Vice President. As a strong advocate and member of CCPOA's State Board of Directors, Lance helped make CCPOA one of the largest and most influential law enforcement associations in the State. In 2004 Lance was elected to the position of Executive Vice President for his second three-year term. In 2005 Lance took over the Legislative operation of CCPOA as Chief of Governmental Affairs. In 2008 Lance was promoted to CCPOAs Chief Communications Officer.

During his career, Lance was involved either on the board or as a member of the California Employees Chapter of Corrections USA, the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation, the Association of Black Correctional Workers, the Chicano Correctional Workers Association, the California Staff Assault Task Force, the Crime Victims United California and the Doris Tate Crime Victims Bureau.

Lance has always been active in the community starting in high school where he became a board member and spokesperson for People Reaching Out. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Loyal Order of the Moose, and supporter of VFW Post 6604 in Folsom.

Lance is survived by his children: Ian age 21, Michael age 18 and Dylan age 9, as well as his parents, Tim and Barbara Corcoran, sister Tammy Karnow and her husband Jerry Karnow, sister Candyce Corcoran Steward and her husband Rick Steward, Sundi Lyons his fianc, Christine Corcoran the mother of his children, and uncles, aunts and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Lance is preceded in death by his younger brother Eric Jon Corcoran, as well as his grandparents, Jack and Betty Corcoran and Bob and Betty Ritchey.

A public viewing will be held at Mt. Vernon Mortuary, 8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks, California from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2011. Services will be held in Lance's honor at the Divine Savior at 9079 Greenback Lane in Orangevale at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2011. A reception and Celebration of Life will be held after the service. Details regarding the reception will be provided at the service, or that information can be obtained through Mt. Vernon or the Heal Lance Facebook page.

As a man of deep compassion who supported numerous causes, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Lance's memory to the charity of your choice .

Missing you Lance.

As your birthday passed, and Thanksgiving arrives you are on my mind. We are hosting this year, and the last time we hosted you were there. You pulled the sweet potatoes out of the oven and spilled them all over the floor...which made for a slippery, buttery mess! Just know as I pull the sweet potatoes out of the oven this year, I'll do it with you on my mind.

Thought of you on Father's Day yesterday. Know the boys are loved and taken care of. Though you were not physically with us, your memory certainly was. Hope you are on the beaches of heaven in your Tommy Bahama duds reading a good book! Rest peacefully....

To the Corcoran family. I grew up right around the corner from Lance. We went to school together; Earl legette, Carnegie and BV. I have many fond memories of those years. I concidered Lance a good friend. I have not seen Lance since 1982 but, it sounds like he was a great father and an exceptional leader that will be missed greatly.

I wish you well Lance as you have physically left this world as we know it and spiritually entered into another. The sacrifices you made as a person, father, and husband and as a friend to improve this association will not be forgotten. Our remembrance will be of life’s achievements we shared with our profession and your perseverance to improve the association during the earlier years. Your life will be celebrated without sorrow…. may peace be with you …

For a fellow Irishman I'll raise a pint in your honor today and say:

Neighbours respected you,
Trouble neglected you,
The angels protected you,
And heaven accepted you.
God's Blessing be upon you.
You'll be missed.

Lance, it will not be the same at the conventions without you. Making us all laugh. At the last one, you made some of us cry as you shed tears over two comrades. I still reflect on the Donner days and the meal you made all of us. Good memories will always live in our hearts. Prayers and solace to the family as Lance enters into another life. He just received new employment as an angel.

As I sit I reflect back on the time you chose to show compassion and generousity to me and to others at Bella Vista. Whether in Drivers Training or at a Halloween Party at your home, you made all feel welcome and that they had a place at the table.

To the Corcoran Family - I am deeply saddened by Lances passing. He was such a bright and brilliant light here on earth. Lance had his struggles, as we all do, and I hope he is in place where he is at peace with himself and is no longer struggling. He was at my wedding, there when I brought home my children, we spent our holidays together and many, many nights filled with karaoke and laughter when we lived down the street in Rancho Murieta. I will continue to miss his humor, love for the arts, his ability to tell a story and get you doubled over with laughter, his love for cooking and his passion for life. He once told me "Jen, sweetie, if you wrote a book about your life, it would be very readable"....if he only knew his life's book would be readable as well...but ended much, much to soon. This is a very, very tough loss.
