Lawrence Bugbee Obituary

8.25.2018 Larry Bugbee died on August 25, 2018 in the company of his family in Gardnerville, NV from causes incident to age, at 90. Larry was born in West Orange, NJ to Francis and Elliot Bugbee and had one brother, Elliot Bugbee. Larry attended Phillips Exeter Academy (class of '45), Brown University (class of '49), and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (class of '54). He did his residency in Pediatrics at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY and served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Seaman FirstClass. He became a pediatrician and married his love, Carol Brock Bugbee in 1954. They were married 51 years, until Carol's death. Larry was a beloved pediatrician in Denver, CO and Fair Oaks, CA until his retirement in 2007. He enjoyed taking care of children until they had kids of their own, and then caring for the next generation. He talked many new moms off the ledge with his common-sense advice and experience and shared his favorite wisdom with them: "Never wake a sleeping baby!" He served in several leadership capacities at Mercy San Juan Hospital, including Chief of Staff, Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Secretary, Department of Pediatrics. Larry and Carol attended St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Carmichael for more than 35 years, where they met lifelong friends, served in various groups (such as the choir), and led as vestry members, and served on search committees. They had four children: Matt (Carol) Bugbee, Dunellon, FL; Kathy (Dennis) Cocking, Gardnerville, NV; Tom (Carolyn) Bugbee, Eugene, OR/Blue Hill, ME; and Beth Wolfer, Salt Lake City, UT. Between them, there are 13 grandchildren who loved Nana and Pop dearly and nine great grandchildren. Larry enjoyed writing and woodworking, and made several dollhouses for his grandchildren and also tried his hand at model wooden boats, once he moved to Maine in 2005. Although a New Englander at heart, some of his favorite family memories were created at his and Carol's cabin at Bodega Bay and later at Sea Ranch, where they hosted reunions of as many kids and grandkids as possible. Larry's ashes will be interred next to Carol's at the Lawrence and Carol Bugbee Columbarium at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Carmichael. Memorial to be held at St. Michael's on March 16, 2019 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a gift to your favorite charity, in honor of Larry's very generous spirit.

It warms my heart to read about the impact my dad had on so many lives. He was a gem! His memorial service was wonderful and my brothers and sister and I loved visiting with his friends and colleagues. 32 family members ventured to Bodega Bay for 3 days after the service to continue celebrating his great life. Hes greatly missed but is fondly remembered everyday.

With loving thoughts and prayers for his family. Dr Bugbee was my doctor when I was young since the day I was born (72). The best Dr I ever had. I always remembered actually like seeing the Dr because he was so kind and wonderful. He truly Cared for his patients. Also the lollypop I got after the visit was a plus. He will be truly missed and always in my heart as a selfless and giving person in this world.

Larry & Carol were first friends of my family above Larry serving as "pediatrician" to my 3 children and then grandchildren. We attended church together and enjoyed fun times. As a couple they were my inspiration as a parent. God Bless you Dr. B. You will forever be in my thoughts and fond memories!

Dr Bugbee was my pediatrician when I was a child. He was simply amazing. He was so kind and always had a way of making a scared little girl feel comfortable and at ease during my Dr visits. I can still remember his kind smile to this day. Heaven definitely gained a most wonderful angel. He will truly be missed.

Dr. Bugbee was both my children's pediatrician for the first 18 years of their lives. My daughter Suzanne always referred to him as Dr. Buggy in an affectionate way and he always called her Suzie. She never let anyone else call her that. And my son Marshall never wanted to go to another Dr. .....We'll always remember his voice and how much he truly cared...
