Mary Ellen passed away peacefully on April 8, 2009. Mary was born on Feb. 23, 1923 in Brookings, SD. Her mother died at an early age at which time she and her sister, Thalis, were raised by her loving grandparents William and Harriet Biggar, who were the first settlers in the SD territory. Mary Ellen had many wonderful stories about her childhood being raised on a farm. She attended college at Brookings State College in 1942. Her studies were interrupted by WWII, at which time she went to work for the phone company as an operator in NY and CA. It was during this time she met and married the love of her life Clinton Bramwell in 1942 in Sacramento, CA. They were married in 1942 in Boulder, Colorado where Clint was going to Naval Radio School. After the war, they settled in Sacramento in 1947 where she remained for the rest of her life. Mary went to work for the State Franchise Tax Board but took a break in service to raise their two sons, Christian and Gordon. She returned to work for the State where she retired. Mary was an excellent seamstress and made many of her own outfits on an old Singer sewing machine. The other love in Mary's life was exploring Nevada ghost towns and spending time at the family cabin in Manhattan, NV. She was truly a gentle soul and loved being with friends and family. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton, in 1999. She is survived by her sons, Christian and Gordon. Special thanks to Peter and Eunice Garbi of Garbi's Care Home for all their wonderful support and help with Mom. A memorial service will be held at the Gormley and Sons' Funeral Home, 2015 Capitol Ave. on Friday, May 15th at 12:00 Noon. Friends are asked to join us for lunch after the service from 1:00-3:00PM at the China Buffet, 1402 Broadway, Downtown Sacramento.
