Michael Quigley Obituary

QUIGLEY, Michael Dennis
Born July 29, 1950, in St. Helena, Calif., died unexpectedly on September 19, 2009, in the Sacramento home of his fiancee Nonie Stevens. Michael was a passionate instructor at Cal Poly, Pomona, the last 10 years of a 20 year university teaching career. He also enjoyed his role as a journalist for a small Southern California newspaper for several years. Michael's other passion was his family. He was a very caring and loving son and brother, and although he had no children of his own, he was an especially attentive uncle to his many nieces and nephews. His family is happy to know Michael was fortunate to have recently found his soul mate in Nonie and they had enjoyed extensive traveling and many special times together this past year. Loving son of Charles Quigley and Delores and Duane Evans, devoted brother of Brian (wife Betty), Kevin (wife Melinda), Lori (husband Mark), Diane, and Gary and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Michael's life will be held for family and friends at the home of Brian and Betty Quigley on Saturday, September 26, at 1:00 p.m.

I was one of Dr. Quigley's students in the early 1990's at TWU. He was so free spirited, wore shorts to class, and challenged us to live outside of our own experiences! What an awesome teacher! I was looking for him to tell him how much I appreciated him. Unfortunately, I am too late to tell him, but I can let the family know that the world is a better place because of him! I will miss him! It's been a little over one year since I lost you. You are with me all the time and I still look for your little beat up Honda when I turn the corner to our house. I miss our daily Upwards games and the way you'd rug my neck each night before we fell asleep. Thanks for giving your unconditional love to me and accepting my love. You were and always will be the love of my life.

You were a really good english teacher, one of the best teachers on cal poly for sure. I will never forget what I learned in your class. It is sad and unfortunate to hear your gone. Its still hard to believe you were in a classroom just last year and now your gone. Iam sure you have touched many people's lives. You will live on through everyones prayers and memories. I wish your family the best during the difficult times.

I was a student of Dr. Quigley's in the early 90's when he was at Texas Woman's University. Tonight I happened upon a poem in a book that reminded me of Dr. Quigley. Specifically, it reminded me of how I shared both a short story and poem I had written with him one day. He read both and told me to stick to short stories! I have reflected humorously over the years about his honesty and I must say, I agreed with him! I have also reflected many times that he was the only professor who could have ever made diagramming a sentence fascinating. When I think about the significant things I learned in college, I nearly always think of him. He made ALL facets of what he taught thought-provoking and interesting. Anyway, on a whim, I decided to google him tonight and see what became of him after he left TWU so many years ago. It is no surprise whatsoever to see that he continued to inspire many other students in the years since. I am sorry for his family and his fiance for their loss. His life certainly left a positive ripple in the universe.

My deepest condolences go out to the Quigley family.
I graduated from the California Polytechnic University, Pomona approximately a year and a half ago.
It was and always will be an honor to have had a Professor like Michael Dennis Quigley.
Today, I decided to send him an e-mail and ask him if I, as an Alumni, could attend one of his class sessions and hear him speak. I now understand this will not be possible. This, fellow friends and family, is the type of impact Professor Quigley made on my life.
I will never forget this amazing person and am thankful for all of the time we spent communicating inside and outside of the classroom.
If anyone knows where I can pay my respects, please e-mail me. I will drive and fly if I have to. Can't believe you're gone Quigley...

I'm sorry for your loss. I absolutely hate public speaking, but his public speaking class was the best class I took my freshman year. He was easily one of my favorite professors and he will seriously be missed.

His words of the classroom will not be forgotten. He is ONE of the few professors that made an impact on my life.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I lived down the street from the Quigley's growing up. I am so sorry.

Please accept my sympathies. I truly am sorry for your loss, particularly Dee, Chuck, and Duane. There is no greater pain than the death of a child.

God bless.
