Mike Shattuck Obituary

Shattuck, Mike "Mike da Bike"
Mike was the oldest child of J. Howard and Zella Shattuck. He was born in Dec. 1941, and passed away suddenly in Sacramento in Dec. 2010, one week after his 69th birthday. He will be greatly missed by all who worked with him, rode with him, celebrated with him, grew up with him, and the family he left behind. He is survived by his sister, Susan (Jeff) Conklin, three nephews, Mark (Michel), Todd (Jamie), Brad, and his very special companion, Kristina, and several cousins. Mike will be remembered for his outgoing personality, his loyalty to his friends, his business expertise, and his love of motorcycles, cars, Nascar, and racing. He came to California after serving four years in the US Air Force, pursuing a Bachelor's degree and employment with several auto related firms. He is the former owner of Harley Davidson of Sacramento and past president of the H-D Dealers Advisory Group. The friends and acquaintances he made through his work with Harley - Davidson were very important and meaningful to him. A celebration of his life will be held in the Spring, 2011. Donations in his memory can be made to the Leukemia Society. Condolences may be sent to the family & Kristina through Legacy.com

Wow. I heard about Mike's passing this morning. Mike was instrumental in helping me organize the Muscular Dystrophy Associtation's "Ride the Sierras" motorcycle run back in the 80's...he help me recruit local dealerships and riders that utlimately raised thousands of dollars to help kids in wheelchairs...thanks Mike for all the support and helping those kids!

I was saddened to learn of Mike's passing. I had the pleasure of selling Mike a few GMC pick ups over the years when he had the Harly dealership in Sacramento. A true gentleman to deal with.
Years later when I moved to Modesto to sell Chevrolet, he went out of his way on a trip to southern California to stop in and say hello. I still have the Harly jeans I bought from him. Although I am to fat to wear them now.
My condolences to his family and friends.

What it be? What it look like? What it is! What it was! Mike and I use to greet one another every day when I worked at Sac Harley with these lines until one of us got stumped on the next line. He was a great boss, and a scary boss at the same time.
He kept me on my toes for sure!

He worked on these in England

Kristina; Thank you for being there when he was dying. Many of us wanted to be there too; some of us tried; you did it.
Susie; I'm sharing your grief. In many ways, he was my brother, too. He was part of our family and we all looked forward to his visits.

We never missed chilli rellenos and margueritas at Rosa's when he blew through Tucson.
Mike loved freedom and knew how to use it. He was a good man, to the bone. He helped me when I was down, and then never mentioned it again. You couldn't have a better friend, and you couldn't know him long without becoming one.

The last thing he said to me was "It is what it is."

We're missing you, Mike; can't wait to see you on the flip side.

I met Mike in 1965 in Manhattan Beach, where we lived and both drove Porsche Speedsters. He later rented my down stairs unit, where I became his "landlord and adviser". We had many great times on the street before he was sent to Sac. He visited me before Xmas and it was like old times!I will miss him greatly. Goodby old friend.

In 2001 Mike delivered the eulogy at Armando Magri's funeral, while living up to those same standards of honesty and integrity he spoke about. Armando and Lu cherished their relationship with him. Mike was a good friend, and we sure had a few wild times back in the day. Rest in peace buddy.

December 29, 2010

I met Mike in the early 1990s when I started working for Harley-Davidson Motor Company. At the time, Mike had already made the move from District Manager to Dealer Principal.

The story of his purchase of the store from Armando Magri and then sale to Jay Westbrook embody the absolute best of the true family spirit that existed in the company and dealer network at that time. Mike's dream came true and then in return, he made the dreams of others come true. He was and remains a man whose life is worth trying to emulate.

Ride free, slide hard Mike.

For the past several years I cleaned for Mike. We went through a divorce together, shared many stories of his adventures, a house remodel and finally his illness. I will miss our Wednesday morning talks and shared notes to each other. You were a wonderful client and more so an extraordinary and courageous man to the end. Thanks "Mikey" for keeping me in "beans" for more than 20 years. I will miss you and your contagious outlook on life. May you Rest in Peace.

Where do I start? I am Mike's "little sister" and the last one of our family. He called our mom every Friday and after she died, he called me every Friday. I will miss "Hey, Susie Q...this is your brudder!" Mike was in the Air Force when I was a teenager, and then he moved 3,000 mi. away. We became closer as we aged, and this last week has been extremely emotional for me. I flew to Ca. the day he died, trying to connect the dots, make contacts, etc, but needed to return home to close on our house, as we are moving out of state this next week...and it's Christmas. But despite that, I want to thank all that I have talked to, those of you I've met, and those of you who have written your praises of him. He was one of a kind, who made an impression on all he met. And what friends he had! You've all been wonderful and I hope to meet many of you in June when Kristina and I plan a celebration of Mike's life in Sacramento. I want to hear the stories about Mike...the good, the bad, the funny, the sad. It will be a wonderful gift to my family and his nephews. Thank you all for being there for him!
