Raymond REID Obituary

REID, Raymond Macfarlane
November 3, 1927 - May 12, 2010

Raymond M. Reid was born in Peking, China to Raymond M. Reid, Sr. and Emily McClure Reid. He attended American and British schools in both China and the Philippines until 1939 when his father retired from Standard Vacuum Oil and returned to the United States. Prior to his father's retirement, Ray had crossed the Pacific three times by ship traveling between New York and China.
Ray attended the McBurney School in New York City and graduated from Yale University in 1951 where he was Captain of the Yale Swimming Team. He was a member of a number of NCAA and AAU championship and world-record freestyle relay teams and was elected to the All American Swimming Team in 1949, 1950, and 1951. He was president of the undergraduate Athletic Association, a member of the Fence Club, Scroll and Key Senior Society and Torch Honor Society. Ray founded the Yale Alumni Association of Sacramento in 1962 and served as its president.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Private First Class from 1946-1947 and as a First Lieutenant from 1951 to 1953. He was discharged from the Marine Corps Reserve as a Captain in 1961. Ray was a member of the Marine Corps League's Elk Grove Detachment.
In 1954 he married Joan Gibson in The Little Church around the Corner in New York City.
Ray began a career in business with positions in sales, purchasing and administration for several companies in New York and New England.
In 1960 Ray and Joan moved to Sacramento where Ray worked for KCRA-TV as a member of the national sales development section. Beginning in 1967, as an appointee of Governor Ronald Reagan, Ray served as Executive Secretary of the Educational Television Advisory Committee, Chief of the Division of Consumer Services, Executive Secretary of the California Board of Medical Examiners, and as a Special Assistant to the Governor. From 1977 to 1987 Ray was a loan officer for Home Savings.
After his retirement, Ray and Joan developed and operated Piccadilly Farms, a dog boarding kennel, on their property in Elk Grove, until 2003.
Ray was an avid tennis player. In addition, he loved to spend time at his home on The Sea Ranch with family and friends. With his sense of humor and quick wit, he elicited laughter wherever he went. He enjoyed meeting new people and considered everyone a friend. His family jokingly referred to him as Mr. Nice.
Ray is survived by his wife, Joan, and his daughters: Curran McClure Reid, Madrid, Spain; Gibson Macfarlane Reid (Scott Essex, DVM) Gazelle, CA; Calder McColley Reid (William Holmes), Independence, CA; Halsey McSherry Reid, Sacramento; and his grandchildren: Zachary Boysen, McKenna Stewart Bruyette, and Taylor Macfarlane Bruyette.
Friends are invited to celebrate Ray's life at Silva's Sheldon Inn, 9000 Grantline Road, Elk Grove, on Saturday, May 22, from 11 to 2 PM. At Ray's request, In lieu of flowers, remembrances in his name may be made to the Class of 1951 Memorial Scholarship, Yale University Office of Development, Box 2038, New Haven, CT 06521.

I was a high school senior who interned at the California Board of Medical Examiners in Sacramento when Mr. Reid was the Executive Secretary back in the early 70s. The kindness, warmth and attention he showed me as a teenager in an incredibly busy office speaks to his strong character and generosity.

I remain thankful for having met him.

AM looking for relatives of Ray and Joan Reid as I have letters that Ray's mother, Emily, wrote to my mother when Emily lived in China back in the 20's and 30's. Also have a couple photos of Ray when he was little and living in China. I feel his relatives should have these letters and photos as memories are important.

Dear Joan,
I have such wonderful memories of Ray in California and earlier in New York City. Will always remember meeting you in Coronado and having an outstanding evening on the beach. My thoughts are with you and your family and I know we'll always remember his wonderful smile and laughter. Love to all, Valentine

Hi Joan and girls, this is Dan Via. You probably don't remember me, but I worked for you at the kennel in the fall of 1990 while I was going to school and waiting to go to USMC Bootcamp. There have been few people that have had a profound effect on my life and Ray was one of them. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing, I just expected him to live forever I guess. I was watching a program last night regarding Ronald Reagan's legacy and it reminded me of the stories that Ray told me from when he was Governor so I thought I'd say hi and then I found this. I last talked to Ray probably 10 years ago, but I still tell my kids about his self-admitted "two-time loser" status in the MC and how astonishingly strong he was. Short story, then I'll go. We were removing bushes over by the big dog kennel and I'd been digging at them all afternoon when Ray came over and said, "Why don't you try this" and grabbed ahold of the bush and just pulled it straight up out of the ground. We laughed at my wasted effort for quite awhile. Ray was a true man and I will continue to think of him often. I appreciate having known him and all of you.

Dear Joan,
Ray was an exceptional gentleman and a delight to know. I enjoyed talking to him always and he once gave me some very good real estate advice. I am sorry for your loss and wish you peace of mind and heart. Warmest regards, Terry Tonjes (Sacramento CA)

Halsey, my condolences for your loss. I, too, have thought of your father as Mr. Nice as he treated me well and appeared to take an interest in me. I still have the Marine Corps tie pin he gave me. I had no idea how extraordinarily accomplished he was as he was not boastful or arrogant.

Please extend my sympathies to your mother.

Dear Joan, Curran, Gibson, Calder and Halsey,
I'm so sorry to hear about the death of your husband and father. I know that you are all very close and that he will be dearly missed. I pray that he is at peace and that God may give you all strength to get through this difficult time. In his memorial service, don't forget to have everyone tell a story about Ray. That was one thing I really enjoyed at my own Dad's funeral. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
