Dr. Robert Andrew Achtel

Robert Achtel Obituary

Beloved husband of Ricci, father of Bergen and Roland, and grandfather of Griffin, Morgan, Alaina, and Bryn. Dedicated Pediatric Cardiologist for over 50 years and avid pilot. Bob was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1941. He attended Adelphi College, U. of Cincinnati Medical School, Residency and Fellowship at Yale University. Bob married his high school sweetheart Ricci on March 10, 1963. Bob's calling in life was to be a physician, something he knew he wanted from a young age. Most of Bob's life is defined by his dedication to his patients. He had a deft touch working with children, often treating the most delicate premature babies. Bob retired from the practice of medicine in 2015 after over 50 years of care. While Bob enjoyed many hobbies over his lifetime, he was most passionate about flying Mooney airplanes. Bob became a certified flight instructor, frequent author for the Mooney Aircraft Pilots Association, recent author for Plane & Pilot, and national public speaker on issues of health and flying. We love you and you will be deeply missed. The world was a better place with you in it. Services will be held at Home of Peace on October 4th at 11:00 a.m.

Doctor Achtel was my new born sons cardiologist, after some tests in Sacramento, he was transferred to San Francisco for emergency surgery, that saved my sons life, it was redone again at age of 6 in Sacramento, artery & valve. He (my son) is now 40 years old and still has the artificial valve that Doctor Achtel put in when he was 6. His cardiologist here in Wyoming says no need to replace it if it's still working. I'm sure there are many stories like ours. Thanks to His family for this amazing Man.

Our family just learned of Dr. Achtel´s passing and we are so sad. In 1990, I gave birth to twins and learned one had a severe heart defect. We had to take both twins to Dr. Achtel everyday until our son was strong enough for his first surgery at 5 weeks old. A second followed and a third. In 1992, we had another son who was also cared for by Dr. Achtel and had two open heart surgeries. I truly do not know how my husband and I would have survived without Dr. Achtel´s kindness, understanding, expertise, patience and so, so much care. We send our forever love and gratitude to your family for sharing him with so many .

I'm very sad to hear about Dr. Achtel's passing. I am sending continued love and well wishes to his family and all that loved him. From age 8-22 I had the good fortune of being treated by Dr. Achtel. He always listened to me and respected my voice, even as a child. He continued to help me and my family figure out my heart issues through many ups and downs and for that I will be forever grateful. I always enjoyed hearing about his flying adventures, his ties to New York, and his family. I truly believe he was the best pediatric cardiologist, and feel lucky to have known him. His memory remains in my heart now and forever.

Dr. Achtel will always hold a special place in my heart and the world is a little less bright without him. I am just now finding out about his passing because I had a whim to thank him for literally saving my life and being the only doctor who didn't believe I was crazy of faking my chronic illnesses. He was my hero in so many ways and I had the urge to tell him about where I ended up in life, not that it mattered since he had so many patients, but he always told me I'd be memorable. I was devastated when he switched retired, as I'd known him basically all of my life. I hope he is resting peacefully. Thank you Dr. Achtel. And to his family, I am sorry for your loss, and hope you are healing

Dr. Achtel was like a father to my grandson who was a preemie. I raised him and called Dr. Achtel many many times over the years asking his advice about many things. He was there for us every time. There was no one like him. Such a very special person. I missed him so much when he retired and you all moved. The last time I saw him was in Smart and Final just after his hospitalization. So sorry he is gone. Wonderful, amazing human being.

Dr Achtel... the man who literally has saved my life. My whole life you have been there for me. I have so many memories of you and all the locations we've been to. Without you I wouldn't have made it this far in life. Because of your dedication and knowledge I was able to be healthy enough to have the two beautiful miracles I did. I'm sure I still have your letter for a follow up appt with a note from you to see how the new baby was. I've missed you when you left practice and now I can only hope that we will meet on the other side and know each surgery going forward a part of you will be there. I can't thank you and your family enough for giving us so much time with you in practice.

I just found out about you losing the love of your life. I am heartbroken for you and your family. He was such a kind, generous person.
Mandy Robins, Pam Larson and I talked about coming to visit you after Dr. Bob retired but unfortunately, life gets in the way. I will never forget his skill and patience with technically difficult young babies and children or his love of flying or our shared lunches together from Great Harvest. Good memories. Much love, Deborah Calo p.s. I wanted to send you a card but don't have your address so figured this would be the best way to reach out to you.

A simple message on this board can not express the impact that Dr. Achtel had on my life. I feel so lucky to have known him and been in his care for 20 years of my life. Thank you to his family for sharing him with us kids.

Dr. Achtel my son Olvin Burks and I want to say thank you for everything you did for him as your patient. You treated him from the age of 2 until his early 30's. He is 46 now due to the wonderful care you provided during his 3 surgeries. You always told the story of how Olvin was responsible for Sutter changing the dolls they used when showing the parents and kids where the tubes would be after surgery. You said when Olvin (at age 4) woke up he asked was he a girl, that was because Sutter always used a girl doll for the demonstration . After that they used little boy doll too. Olvin was sad to hear of your passing. May you Rest In Peace Dr. Achtel.

Dr.Achtel is well loved by his former patients. which in some cases was generations. I would get calls from his patients expressing the confidents they had not only in his care but life advise. One call I remember receiving was from one of his patients urgently needing to speak to him as he was refinancing his home and desperately needed Dr. Achtels advise. His patients loved him and counted on him. He was admired by his colleagues and most people which paths he crossed. May the perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

Oh Dr. Achtel, I will miss you being in the world. For so many years you were the chair of the Institutional Review Board (our IRB) at our hospital - the committee tasked with overseeing research and ensuring its quality. Under your wing were gathered many dedicated people who worked hard to help patients and support quality research. IRB Chair was likely the least known of your work and accomplishments, but with your compassion and humor, commitment to excellence and dedication to healing, you guided our committee to be the best itcould be in service to patients and their families and their physicians. It was a singularly unique and wonderful experience to be part of that team - an experience that will not be duplicated. You were always fair, always mindful of others' needs, and often managed to bring some mention of planes or your dogs or your beloved wife and family into the conversation. It was such an honor and privilege to work with you, and I send my love to Ricci and the family - who knew you best. And because another of our members, Pat, is no longer with us to say it herself, let me say for her and with her, "Blue skies and tailwinds, Dr. Bob."
