Robert Cabrera Obituary

CABRERA, Robert Michael
Born on October 23, 1985 passed away June 6, 2008 after a long battle with leukemia. Robert was an amazing young man: kind hearted, compassionate, honorable, and wise beyond his years. He is survived by his father, Michael Cabrera, his mother Rena Shaw, and his step parents Derek Hocking and Janie Smith. Robert will also be missed by his step brother Deric, grandparents Ellen Miguel, Joe Cabrera, many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He will be joyously reunited with his grandparents, Bud and Mary Shaw. Robert held a second degree black belt in Karate, and was an accomplished trumpet player. His greatest joys included his comic book collections, and his video games, as well as his eclectic taste in music. Robert lived in and loved the Carmichael community his entire life, attending Charles Peck Elementary, Will Rogers Middle School, and graduated with the Del Campo High School class of 2003. He continued his education and his love for jazz as he played trumpet for the American River College jazz band for two years. The family would like to offer a special appreciation to Dr. Quadro and his staff for their loving ways, and their devotion to Robert. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 16@ 6:00pm at the First Baptist Church of Fair Oaks located at 4401 San Juan Ave at Winding Way. In lieu of flowers, or to honor Robert, donations can be made to his Memorial Fund. Please write: [email protected] for more information.

To Robert’s dear family, I do not know you and I did not have the privilege of knowing Robert, but my heart goes out to you as you begin your journey of grief due to the loss of your dear son. Our 22 year old son, Zack, died in June 2006, and we know the sadness you are feeling. If you ever want to talk with a mom who knows the pain you are going through, you are very welcome to contact me. There is an amazing support group in the Roseville/Sacramento area for parents who have lost children and we would be honored to provide you with the compassionate support that grieving parents need. You are in my prayers.

I didn't know Robert really well, but met him on a few occasions when picking Deric up from the house. Robert, you are no longer here in the physical, but you live on in the hearts of all who love you. I look forward to seeing you on the other side, when one day my address will change permanently. Thank you for the impact you made in the lives of the people I love and in mine all those many years ago.

I have not personally seen you in years, but you impacted my life even as a child as I saw you and Deric interact with each other. Thank you for those special moments I got to spend with you oh so long ago.

Rena -
I am so sorry to hear about Robert. What a sweet young man. I remember when he was little in his stroller. I hadn't seen him or you in years and then this small world brought him to work with my daughter at Round Table. We had the privilege of having him at our home a few times. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family. May God bring you and your family peace at this time. I hope to hear more about Robert's fund. All my Love!

From the first time I met Robert I knew that he was a special young man. In our time together, you could not miss seeing the love he had for his Mother and his grandparents he also had a special love for animals in his own quiet way. We still have pictures of Robert in our kitchen and his old dog Sadie is still around. Knowing some of the sacrifices you made for your son Rena, Robert was very fortunate to have you for his mom. I am blessed to have had the opportunity and privilege to have known such a fine young man. It saddens me to know Robert’s life was cut so short, and he was not given the opportunity to touch so many more peoples lives.
