Robert Mahan Obituary

Robert P. Mahan departed this life on May 28, 2017. A third generation native Californian, Bob was born on March 16, 1927, the third son of Maurice T. and Irene (Rooney) Mahan. He attended Roseville City Schools, graduating from Roseville High in 1945 where he met the love of his life Gloria Zerbe. After serving in the Coast Guard as a pharmacist mate during WWII, Bob, along with his three brothers, attended Placer College (now Sierra Community College) where the four brothers played football and were elected to the Student Body Government. After graduation in 1948, Bob continued his education at the University of California, Berkeley where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Upon receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology in 1950, he returned to Roseville and entered in to the family business, Mahan's Furniture and Appliances. In August of 1950, he and Gloria were married and settled in Roseville and raised their family. Bob's life-long career in politics began in 1955 when he was elected to the Roseville City School Board, a position he held until his election to the Roseville City Council in 1958. He also served as president of the Roseville Chamber of Commerce for two years. It was during his tenure as mayor that Roseville was awarded the title of "All-American City" in 1964. In 1966, Bob was elected to the Placer County Board of Supervisors, a position he would hold for the next 24 years. Through his years of public service, Bob was particularly proud of the legislation passed and signed in Washington D.C., which guaranteed Placer County ownership of their water resources. In 1976, Bob opened Roseville Liquor, an establishment the family ran for the next 20 years. Upon his retirement in 1992, Bob, a life-long avid hunter, continued his pastime taking great pleasure in his annual trips throughout the United States in search of game with his brothers, friends, and later his son Robert and nephew. A life-long member of St. Rose Catholic Church, Bob was also a member of the Roseville Elks Lodge, the Roseville Lions Club, the 20/30 Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Honorary Member of the Sons of Italy. He was a member of Coon Creek Trap Club winning many competitions through the years. Recently a 10 acre Roseville park was dedicated in Bob's honor for his 37 years of public service. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and sisters-in-laws: John and Mary Ann, Tom and Virginia, David and Betty, and nephew Kevin Mahan. Bob is survived by his wife of 67 years Gloria, his children Shauna Pompei (Michael), Robert Jr (Kaile), Kathleen (Patrick Kozlowski), and his grandchildren, Lucas Dotta (Nicole), Paloma and Pilar Pompei, Tynan, Teddy (Aniko), Timolin Mahan, Sean (Kelly) and Erin Kozlowski. Many nieces and nephews, especially his hunting partner and beloved "second son" Patrick Mahan, also survive him. Bob requested a private funeral ceremony at his life-long parish, Saint Rose Catholic Church in Roseville.

To All Bob's Family,
We have lost a Pillar of Roseville. My sincere sympathy and condolences to you all. I had the privilege of working for Bob many years ago at Roseville Liquor Store while laid off at the Railroad. Working for him and Bill is a very fond memory. True Gentlemen wonderful bosses. Bob will be truly missed by many.
Sincerely,
