Robert McCORD Obituary

McCORD, Robert "Bob" Robert "Bob" McCord, 90, of Sacramento, passed away on February 11, 2015 at Mercy General Hospital. Bob was born on November 28, 1924 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Robert and Mildred McCord. He graduated from high school in 1943 and immediately and proudly enlisted in the Army. He fought in France, Belgium, and Germany with the 66th Armored Infantry Battalion, 12th Armored Division. One of a true "band of brothers", Bob would comment later in life to his family that a good day for he and his buddies while over in Europe fighting was when they were able to hitch a ride on a tank or finding an empty farmhouse to rest from the harsh winter elements. On January 19, 1945, while on patrol, he was hit by enemy fire and subsequently received the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged from the Army on January 2, 1946. Once home, Bob attended and graduated from Marquette University with a Mechanical Engineering degree. Bob married his sweetheart Jayne Frye on November 5, 1955 after relocating to Southern California to take a job with North American Rockwell. In 1956, he and his bride moved to Sacramento where Bob began work as a rocket engineer at Aerojet General. He continued working there in the early 60's during the height of the space race. Bob continued his engineering career until he retired from Mather AFB as a civilian employee in May 1989. Bob and Jayne were avid Scottish Country dancers, many times traveling to San Francisco or Mill Valley on Friday nights just to attend classes and be with friends. They also loved taking county line dancing classes at the In Cahoots Dance Hall on Arden Way. Their friends and fellow dancers affectionately referred to them as "Mr. & Mrs. In Cahoots." Bob is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jayne, son Dan (Nancy), grandchildren Elizabeth (Cory) Buttler and Stephen McCord, great grandson Henry James Buttler and many family and friends. Services are being arranged through Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes and will be private.
