Sacramento, California - Sherma Lynn Hamakawa (McVay), devoted wife, mother and grandmother, peacefully passed away due to cancer on May 22nd. With her 2 daughters and husband by her side, she was afforded to enter eternal sleep in the comfort of her own home.
Sherma is survived by her husband, David and their children Jamie Ortega (Craig), Corryn Osborne (Jeff) and grandchildren, Raelynn, Reagan, Brayden and Grant. Brother Michael (Patty), sister Cheryl and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sherma was born in Fremont California on January 7, 1960 to Sherman and Barbara McVay. She graduated from Irvington High School in 1978 and went on to pursue a secretarial degree with Heald College. She met the love of her life, David, at the age of 19 while working at Endow Landscapes Inc., in the Bay Area. A few years later she took a position with Fleming Foods in Sacramento which later became known as C&S Wholesale Grocers. On March 1st 1985 David and Sherma married and soon after became a family of 4.
Sherma was able to remain a full-time employee and active member of the Teamsters Union Local 150 while still finding the time to tend to all of her maternal duties. After 30 years of dedicated service she retired and found great pleasure in watching over her grandchildren everyday. They enjoyed being active outside and visiting many of the parks around Sacramento. They would spend most of their days visiting local attractions such as the Sacramento Zoo, Fairytale Town and Funderland. She found happiness spending time with family and making her much loved deviled eggs for all of the family events.
A celebration of life will be held later this summer. The family is grateful for the compassion and support they have received from family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Sherma to Fairytale Town, at fairytaletown.org/hamakawa/.
