Vern Richard McCarthy

1930 - 2018

Vern Richard McCarthy, age 87, passed away on May 17, 2018. He was born on October 31, 1930 in Toledo Ohio. Vern lived in Chicago, Illinois until he was eleven years old. His family then moved to Northern California where they made their home in Sacramento, CA. At 17 years old, Vern voluntarily joined the United States Navy where he served in the Korean War. After completing his Naval tour, Vern returned to Sacramento. He joined the Sacramento Fire Department as an emergency medical technician. He retired as a fire captain after 24 years of service. Upon his retirement Vern and his wife, Eugenia ventured together to establish a very successful manufacturing and commercial window covering business. The company, McCarthy's Draperies served Sacramento businesses including government entities in Sacramento. The company operated for 37 years. Vern enjoyed fishing at his summer home in Dillon Beach, CA as well as snowmobiling in beautiful Lake Tahoe. Especially close to Vern's heart was his love for the Jesuit Rugby team. He volunteered for many years on the Jesuit Rugby coaching staff. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Eugenia, his son Matthew McCarthy of Sacramento, CA; Timothy McCarthy of North Carolina; Kathleen Cooper and Erin Corbin of Michigan; and Colleen Bradford of Washington. He is also survived by his two grand-daughters, Stacy Klein of Michigan and Dune Ives of Washington and three great-grandchildren. Viewing to be held at East Lawn Memorial Park on Friday, May 25, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at East Lawn Memorial Park, 4300 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95819 on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at 1 p.m. A Celebration of Life reception will be held at Arden Hills Resort Club & Spa, 1220 Arden Hills Lane, Sacramento, CA 95864. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the Alzheimer Aid Society of CA in the name of Vern McCarthy.
