Vernon Walton Obituary

August 27, 1930 - March 16, 2018 He was a simple man, led a simple life and loved the Lord. Dr. Vernon L. Walton, "Sonny", was born in Wynne Arkansas. He was one of six children, his mother a school teacher and his father an aluminum plant worker. As a young child, his family moved to Joliet Illinois. After graduating high school, he went to Langston University in Oklahoma. After college graduation he attended Medical School at the University of Illinois and received his Medical Degree in 1957. After Medical School he completed residency training at Cook County hospital in Chicago. It was there he met his wife Velma, who was studying nursing. They married and moved to California in 1960, where his wife was a native. He spent two years active duty as a Navy doctor in San Diego. After an honorable discharge, Dr. Walton moved his family to Sacramento. He started his medical practice in the Del Paso Heights area, in the early 1960's. From Del Paso Heights, he moved to the south Sacramento area. Dr. Walton was the first African American pediatrician in Sacramento. He dedicated his life to improving the health and welfare of all children and their families. A generous and giving man who had an infectious smile, he was beloved. He touched the lives of many until his retirement in 2010. His daughter also a pediatrician assumed his practice. A student of the bible, Dr. Walton loved to serve the Lord. He was very active in his church, Antioch Progressive Baptist, where he served as a Deacon, an elder and a Sunday school teacher. He had a great love for the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. Dr. Vernon Walton is survived by his wife of sixty years, Velma L. Walton and their four children, Vernon L. Walton, Jr., Rosemarie Walton, Kathleen M. Walton and Dr. Stephanie A. Walton. He leaves grandchildren, one brother and a host of nieces and nephews. It was a pleasure meeting Dr Vernon Walton in 1960 when he began admitting patients to Mercy Childrens Hospital along with Dr. John Hudson. They not only took wonderful care of their patients but worked professionally and personably with the nursing staff. They were very respectful, kind, and caring to everyone. Dr Walton will be missed in the community and remembered for all his dedication and service to humanity. Thank you Dr. Walton ! You made a difference in this world.

I'd like to personal thank the Walton family for sharing Dr. Vernon Walton (Lovingly referred to as Doc) life with Sacramento. As we celebrate his life of service to the Lord I will always remember his great friendship to God's people. I was privileged to witness this man of God be a great servant leader at Saint Andrews A.M.E. Church and New Hope Baptist Church. Doc's commitment to teach God's word which is the fundamental remedy to what truly heals the world was appreciated. Doc's faithful support in advising men to follow Christ was un-wavering. I'm sure Sacramentan's would say Doc's shared this life-changing news to our children, our neighbors, and our coworkers. What a compassionate man of God. Doc was meant to be shared with us and I'm grateful that God had our spiritual paths to connect. As followers of Christ our one job is to connect others to God. Doc surely proclaimed "The Good News" to all he came in contact with mentally, physically, and spiritually. I submit Matthew 25:23 in honor of Doc. "Wonderful! his master replied. "You are a good and faithful servant. I left you in charge of only a little, but now I will put you in charge of much more. Come and share in my happiness !" We love you ALL and we will all miss your husband and your dad. BUT we look forward to meeting him in heaven!

Condolences to the Walton family from the McIntosh family. Dr. Walton and my father, Dr. Abraham McIntosh Jr were truly a original and now dying breed. They were the true physicians from the old school. These were the physicians from the segregated south and were pioneers to the West Coast and establishing solo practice. African-American physicians in the south could only be licensed under a white man in the 1950s. The sacrifice these African-American physicians gave was tremendous and I am truly grateful for how they paved the way for us younger physicians. Only surgery, OB/GYN, family practice and pediatrics was offered to African-American physicians. No doubt Dr. Walton was one of the finest. Thank you BLACK MEN!! Again my condolences to the Walton family .

March 27, 2018

Dr. Walton, you were my child hood physician, and both you and Dr. Stephanie Walton were my children's physician. You worked with my mother who was a nurse at Sutter, Patricia Bennett. Although you were our doctors, you made us feel like family. You, Stephanie, and Velma were very kind to us and
And you will be forever missed. THANK YOU for making a difference in our lives and in our community. We love you and will never forget you. Sincerely, Amber Bennett and Family.

March 25, 2018

I am so very deeply sorry for loss. He was the best doctor anyone could ask for. He has been a blessing in our family for as long as he was in practice. Even you Stephanie u are a blessing as well. I appreciated dr. Walton in so many ways. I remember when i was little about 3 or 4 maybe even younger. It didnt matter if i wasnt in the office to see him. He knew what i wanted. I use to ask for shots and wouldnt leave until he acted like he gave me the shot and he would give me the syringe. Thats all i wanted was the syringe so i could play doctor at home. No other doctor would do that just to satisfy me. I love hom for that. I could go on and on. But i wont take up to much more of your families time. Just know that hes in a better place. I Love You All . I will forever be indebted to him and your family. God Bless all of You and stay strong like he would want you to be..

My deepest, deepest, DEEPEST condolences to the Walton family. Dr. Walton was my pediatrician in late 60s until I was a teen. He was also my daughter's pediatrician until I moved from Sacramento. Dr. Walton was placed in my mother's life to save my life when I was an infant. If it wasn't for Dr. Walton doing the work of the Lord, I wouldn't be here today. I will forever be grateful for Dr. Walton and his medical expertise. In the Most recent past, I chose Dr. Walton Pediatrics for my youngest child's pediatrician but Dr. Walton wasn't there; I couldn't believe he retired. My son could no longer go there because of our insurance. I know we all have to go some time but I just never could imagine Dr. Walton passing even in my older age. He was a GREAT man. Peace, love and MANY blessing to the family.

Dr Walton, provided the pediatric care for my three children. Along with that care he provided, knowledge and understanding. He always had a smile and a word of incouragement. Because of those incouraging words, I persued my career in social work. I graduated from Sacramento state University . Shortly afterwards I started my own business that lasted for fiftheen years. I'm now retired and am very thankful for knowing him. REST IN PEACE, my mentor and friend.

A great man and a wonderful Dr. Dr Walton was my pediatrician when he opened his practice in Del Paso Heights and when I had children, he was their Dr also. I loved the way he took a personal interest in his patients. My 3rd son would always get sick when I gave him his formula, I thought I was over feeding him, I finally took him in to see the Dr and Dr Walton told me he was allergic to his formula.
I continued taking all my sons to Dr Vernon/Stephanie Walton...Thank you to the Walton Family for sharing your Father with the Del Paso Heights Community and beyond.
May God give you strength during this time, for we know to be absent from this body,is to be present with the Lord.

Dr.Walton was an exceptional man. He had a practice with Dr. Hudson and that was my kids Dr. When Dr. Hudson passed away I remember him sending a letter to all his patients letting them know that we can stay with him or he would refer us to someone else. I decided to stay being that my kids saw him when Hudson would take a vacation etc. My kids loved Dr. Walton. He was the realist Dr you would ever want to know. He even told me I could put rice cereal in my babies bottle and said I didn't hear that from him lol He even told us personally he was retiring and Dr. Stephanie was taking over. He will truly and deeply be missed. RIH to the Best Dr in Sacramento...Dr Walton. Now he is with his partner Dr. Hudson once again.
