Garland Cregger Obituary

Garland McDonald Cregger

SALISBURY - Another member of The Greatest Generation has died. Garland McDonald Cregger, Chief Petty Officer, Ret. of Salisbury passed away at home on Thursday, January 21, 2010 after several years of declining health. He was born in Saltville, Va. on January 19, 1922 to the late James Martin Cregger and Mabel Cynthia Cumbo Cregger. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Potts Cregger and a sister Pauline (Polly) Cregger Jacobs of Salisbury. Also surviving are daughters Cynthia Carlson, California and Brenda Kahley, Pennsylvania and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters.

Garland's twenty year military career began in 1942 with many years spent on LSTs. On the first day of the invasion of Normandy Garland was in the first wave of LSTs to arrive at Omaha Beach.

After his retirement from military service he completed his education at Florida State University where he earned a degree in Industrial Arts Education. He also earned a Master of Education degree from The State University of NY in Oswego and went on to teach for 13 years in junior highs in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

In 1975 he came to Spencer, NC and opened Cregger Gallery and Framing. His great passion was his art. He enjoyed doing his signature "copper repousse", watercolors, creating new art techniques and visiting art shows and galleries. He also taught many classes in both mediums.

He attended First Baptist Church, Salisbury. Graveside services will be held at the US National Cemetery on Statesville Boulevard Monday, January 25, 2010 at 2:00 PM with Dr. Kenneth Lance, Minister at First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be with Military Honors.

A Visitation Celebration will be held after the graveside service at the Gables at Kepley Farm clubhouse on Garner Drive, Salisbury.

In lieu of flowers please consider memorials to Rowan Regional Medical Center Hospice, 720 Grove St., Salisbury, NC 28144 or to any Haiti Disaster Relief fund or a charity of the donor's choice.

Yvonne, I am saddened by your loss. Saw your name on the UNCG list of reunion attendees. Spencer and Salisbury are still dear to me. Katherine and Ralph Chandler (my parents) are gone but we still visit. Sincerely, Joan Chandler Knowles, Zephyrhills, FL

Yvonne, I was out of town during the time of Garland's death and funeral service. Please know that you are in my thoughts.
I remember well Garland's uniqueness and his many abilities. He made frames for my mirrors in my house on Oakwood Drive in Spencer--made from a lightweight mold of some sort--to keep the large mirror from being so very heavy.
May God's love and your precious memories sustain you during this time of adjustment.
Love,

Ann Ennis
