Gary Burris Obituary
Born on January 30, 1949, in Salisbury, Gary was a lifelong resident of Rowan County. He graduated from South Rowan High School in the Class of 1967 and went on to build a life rooted in hard work, faith, and family.
Gary dedicated 14 years to the masonry trade before transitioning to a long and fulfilling career as a truck driver for Food Lion, where he worked for 21 years. In recent years, he enjoyed spending time at the Webb Road Flea Market, where he found joy in connecting with others and staying active in the community.
A man of deep faith, Gary was a devoted member of Community Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. He was also an active participant in Making a Difference, reflecting his lifelong commitment to helping others and putting their needs before his own.
Gary had many passions outside of work and church. He was an avid deer hunter and fisherman who cherished time spent outdoors. A loyal fan of the Washington Commanders and professional wrestling, he rarely missed a game or match. Above all else, Gary loved spending time with his family--his greatest source of pride and joy.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Judy Burris; daughter Melissa Hill (Tony); son Rodney Burris (Valerie); grandchildren Justin Hill (Taylor), Brittaney Belk (Brandon), Amber Freeman (Josh), Karsyn Burris, and Tyler Avins (Taylor); great-grandchildren Tucker, Paityn & Fisher Hill; Maison & Jayden Belk; Elizabeth & Waylon Hammill; Noella & Adeline Avins; nephew Brian Burris; and several great-nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, James Beamon Burris and Louis Rebecca Bost; his brother George Michael Burris; and brother-in-law Michael Gene Goodnight.
Gary's legacy is one of love, service, and unwavering devotion to those around him. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 15, 2025, from 04:30 PM to 06:00 PM at Trading Ford Baptist Church 3600 Long Ferry Rd.
