George Washington Obituary

George Washington, Sr. was born to the late Booker and Novella Washington on July 2, 1948, George is the second of five sons. George was raised in Rowland, and became a member of New Hope United Methodist Church at an early age. George graduated from the Robeson County Public School System in 1966 and enrolled at Livingstone College, where he majored in Elementary Education. During his time at Livingstone College, George met and wed his wife, Dorothy, on September 27, 1969. George and Dorothy have two children: George, Jr., and Leslie. A third child, Jason, passed away in May 2018. After marriage, George would transfer his membership to join his wife at Soldiers' Memorial AME Zion Church. While attending Soldiers' Memorial, George served in various leadership capacities: Preacher Steward, Chairman of the Steward Board, Chairman of the Finance Committee, Chairman of the Budget Committee, Chairmen of the Men's Booster, Chairman of the Project Committee, and Chairman of the Estimating Committee. He also served as a member of the Soldiers' Memorial Usher's Board, Men's Choir and an Honorary Life Member. George earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1973 from Livingstone College. He would later earn his Master's Degree in Human Development and Learning from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1981. After graduating from Livingstone College, George taught at Department of Juvenile Justice Stonewall-Jackson School, Concord, NC, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as a teacher and Department Chair, and Jordan Driving School as a Driver's Education Instructor. While at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, he coached football, basketball, and track. His teams earned championships in all three sports, and he was named Coach of the Year for basketball and track. George also served as a referee for football and a baseball umpire for the Metrolina Athletic Association. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Jason A. Washington. He leaves the most precious and loving memories to his lovely wife Dorothy M. Washington; son, George Washington, Jr., Charlotte; Leslie W. Green (Rodney), Hahira, GA; daughter-in-law, Tchernavia Washington, Fort Mill, SC; grandsons, Evan T. Green and Miles A. Green, Hahira, GA; sister, Mary Brown, Brooklyn, NY; brothers, Booker T. Washington (Madeline), Phillip Washington (Edith), William Washington (Bertha) and Salathial Washington (Annette); mother-in-law, Creola McClain; sister-in-law, Sandra Funderburk, Salisbury, NC; and a host of nephews, nieces and other loving family members and dear friends. Arrangements: Public Viewing will be Wednesday, December 16, 2020 from 2-5 pm at Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Inc. Due to COVID-19 precautions, the family will have a private funeral that will be publicly extended at 12 noon, Thursday, December 17, 2020 via Facebook Live (from the Facebook Page of Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home, Inc.).
