Gilbert Corbett Obituary

Gilbert “Gil” Eugene Corbett, 84, of Salisbury NC, passed away on February 8th, 2026 surrounded by the love of his family. Gil lived a life defined by service, dedication, faith, and deep pride in where he came from and what he stood for.

Gil was born on April 9, 1941, in Paw Paw, West Virginia, a place he remained fiercely proud of throughout his life. He was one of seven siblings, growing up with six brothers and sisters, and carried those family roots with him wherever life took him.

Gil proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, an honor that shaped his character and remained one of his greatest sources of pride.

In 1976, Gil and his family moved to Salisbury, North Carolina, where he put down lasting roots and built a life centered on family, hard work, and faith. He attended Grace Bible Church, where his faith continued to guide him.

Gil shared 65 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Joann Corbett. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who found his greatest joy in time spent with family. He was preceded in death by his son, Eric Corbett, whom he loved deeply and carried in his heart always.

Baseball was a lifelong passion for Gil. He played in high school, Legion ball, the PennMyer League, and proudly on the Marine Corps baseball team. Later in life, he continued his love of the game by playing and umpiring baseball and softball, something that brought him immense joy and lasting friendships.

Professionally, Gil worked in management roles with Abex Corporation, Blast It All, and Cardinal Container, earning respect through his strong work ethic and leadership. After retirement, he found renewed purpose working part-time at Catawba College, where he enjoyed staying active and connected.

Gil is survived by his loving wife, Joann Corbett; his son Rocky Corbett and daughter-in-law Mary Beth Corbett; his granddaughter Raven Corbett, her husband Shawn, and their children Nash and Cohen; his grandson Bryce Corbett and his partner Shanna; and his brother, Lee Powell.

Above all else, Gil was proud--proud of Paw Paw, West Virginia, proud of the United States Marine Corps, and proud of the family he helped build. His legacy of service, faith, loyalty, and love will live on through all who were fortunate enough to know him.

A celebration of life will be held on February 14th at 1pm, at Grace Bible Church, 6725 Hwy 152 E, Rockwell NC, 28138
