Rev. Dr. Roger Charles Mackey, 78, of Salisbury passed away Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018, at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks. Born Aug. 16, 1940, in Weehawken, N.J., he was the son of the late May Dwyer Mackey and Roger Frank Mackey. He was educated in the Hudson, County, N.J. schools, received his bachelor's degree from Barrington College, Barrington, R.I., his Master of Divinity and Doctorate of Ministry from Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Ga. Dr. Mackey was ordained as a Presbyterian Minister in 1968 and served churches in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. Dr. Mackey served as interim minister of Second Presbyterian Church, Salisbury before retiring. He wrote a column in the Selma, Ala., newspaper while living there, was an accomplished musician, enjoyed painting and pottery. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Susan Truitt Mackey, whom he married Dec. 10, 2009; daughter, Rev. Lynne Mackey Keel and husband Gene of Charlotte; son, Chris Mackey and wife Angie of Braselton, Ga.; step-children, Elizabeth Ellis and husband Rick of San Francisco, Christine Preston and husband Rob of Cedarville, Mich., Sara Gordon and husband Michael of Monroe, Martha Frank of Monroe and David Frank and wife Ruth of Cedarville, Mich.; sister, Florence Howie and husband Carl of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Amina Mansour, Gabrielle Frech and Gwyneth Keel; step-grandchildren, Eden Preston, Selah Preston, Andrew Adler, Naomi Jablonski, Fiona Jablonski, Isaiah Frank, Eliana Frank, Emma Gordon, Benjamin Gordon and Alexander Gordon. Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 30, at Summersett Funeral Home. Service: Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 31, at Second Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Margaret Almeida officiating.
