Angus Backman Obituary

Angus A. Backman 1947 ~ 2004  Angus A. Backman, age 85, of Provo, died June 3, 2004.   He was born and raised in Provo, Utah, the son of Herman and Maria Smith Backman. He married Beth E. Spalding on Jan. 2, 1947. She preceded him in death on April 19, 1991. Angus began work at the age of 12 as a gandy dancer for the Railroad. He later worked at the pipe plant and also at Provo Foundry, before beginning Backman Foundry in 1938. He served in the US Navy during World War II in the Admiralty Islands, and married his sweetheart Beth when he returned from the War. He was active in his faith, and attended St. Marks Lutheran Church, where he served as a Deacon and Treasurer. He was a member of Riverside Country Club for many years and played golf regularly until his health failed.   He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.  He is survived by two sons and a daughter; Wayne Backman of Minneapolis, MN; Judy Argyle of Provo; and Alan Backman of Draper; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and two brothers and a sister, Everett, Elmer and Jenney Backman. Funeral services will be held Tues., June 8, 2004, at 2:00 p.m., in the Berg Drawing Room Chapel, 185 E. Center St., Provo. Friends may call at the Mortuary, Mon. evening, from 6-8 p.m., or Tues., one hour prior to services. Interment, Provo City Cemetery.

It has been an honor and pleasure to have known this fine man. Through the many years of business association, I always found Angus to be a man of his word and his word was his bond. It has been an honor to have known such a good man.

Alan and family, please know of my sincere love of your father and all of you. I will miss him in my life.

Grandpa you will always be in our hearts. Your love for all of us was known to all who knew you. It is going to be hard without you around anymore. Now that you are with grandma and all of your other family you are in a happier place. One day we will all be back together again and until that day comes will will love and miss you everyday.
