David Cline Obituary

David Charles Cline

1948 - 2024

West Jordan, UT-David Charles Cline, age 75, of West Jordan Utah passed away on January 13, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 15, 1948, in Garfield, Utah to James and Florence Cline.

During his youth and high school years, he was the consummate athlete. His performances have been chronicled in numerous articles which have been passed down throughout his family. Everyone who knew Dave knew of his affinity for competitive sports. Being the competitor he was, he played in basketball and softball leagues well into his 50's.

After graduating from Kearns High School in 1967, he proudly served his beloved country as a soldier in the Army 1st Battalion, 10th Infantry from November 1967 through November 1969. During the Tet Counteroffensive in Vietnam, he displayed indomitable courage and loyalty. His distinguished service was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Service Medal, and the Purple Heart, an emblem of his sacrifice and heroism.

Upon his completion of his military tenure, David embarked on a career with the United States Postal Service. He was an exemplary employee who left a legacy of professionalism and integrity upon his retirement on April 1, 2010.

Dave married the love of his life, Janice Marie, on July 11th, 1981. Dave being a divorcee with three children from a prior marriage, and Jan having three children of her own, they became a blended family who experienced the ups and downs associated with stepparents and siblings. Over time, everyone grew to love each other very much, and they became a very tight-knit family.

In his leisure time, Dave and Jan reveled in his passion for sports. Particularly as an avid supporter of the University of Utah. He and Jan were season ticket holders for over 30 years, rarely missing a game. They travelled to many road and bowl games together, which gave them some of their best memories.

His enthusiasm for sports extended to him being a mentor to young athletes as a dedicated coach to the Kearns Babe Ruth and American Legion Baseball organizations. This was a role he wholeheartedly embraced for over 20 years. David loved teaching the intricacies of the game. Through his patient (not always patient) guidance and love for the game, David impacted numerous lives, forming deep connections that continued for many years.

Dave could be at times short-tempered and stubborn. However, you always knew that would be short lived. When he had calmed down, he would make a joke or funny remark letting you know things are calm again. He loved Jan and the kids more than anything and was fiercely loyal to them.

Dave's commitment to his family and country, along with his passion for sports, and coaching culminated in a life well lived. Although he has left this earthly realm, his spirit will reside in the hearts of those who knew and cherished him.

Dave is survived by his sister Sandra, loving and devoted wife Janice Marie, daughters Jill, Tami (Greg), and sons Ty (Wendy), Tony (Brooke) and Jeff (Michelle). In addition to his immediate family, he leaves a legacy of nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Florence, daughter Jodi and granddaughter Alexia.

A celebration of life will be held on February 1st, 2024, at the Lone Peak Indoor Pavilion from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. The address is 10140 South 700 East Sandy, Utah.

My condolences to Jan and the rest of the family. Dave was my Uncle, my Dad, my coach, and my friend. I remember when he went to Vietnam and when he came back, I remember being his first bat boy in 1970 when he started coaching. He coached me in Babe Ruth, but he also coached me in life. He taught me to work hard and don't take anything for granted. I turned out just like him, and I wouldn't have it any other way! I LOVE YOU Pops and I'll miss you!

I never kept in very close contact with him and his family but I thought of them often. I Wished I had kept in better contact. He was a great uncle when I was growing up and he was always there if I needed him.

It was a sad day to hear of the news of Coach Cline's passing. He was always an animated mad especially when he was mad. Especially during baseball practice or game. I had the pleasure of him coaching the 15 year all star team with Steve Dallin. No one expected us to do anything but our coaches. We proved everyone wrong. Through Dave's madness we were able to become the best we could be. RIP in peace Coach Dave. Victor Romero

So sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I knew him through baseball. He did a lot of good for a lot of kids in Kearns, something I saw first hand as the Green Sheet weekly newspaper reporter who covered both Babe Ruth League and American Legion ball. Guys like him are important to so many. He never said anything to me about his Vietnam experiences. But I'm not surprised to find he was a brave man.

I´m sad to learn of this news. I had the privilege of playing on the Kearns Babe Ruth All-Star Team at age 15 for Dave and Steve Dallin. Dave and Steve were great coaches and their passion for the game was evident. We won the State Championship that year and went to the Western Regionals in California. At the time we went further through the Western Regional Tournament than any Utah team had ever gone sadly losing in the championship game and missing out on heading to the Babe Ruth World Series. After that period I would run into Dave occasionally and it always brought back those precious memories. I remember Dave promising us kids if we won the Western Regionals he would let us shave off his beard but unfortunately we lost. Without his beard I probably would have thought Dave was a third coach for the team. My thoughts and prayers go out to Dave´s family. Sincerely, Alan Blain

My condolences to the family and friends of Dave. I had the pleasure of working with him at the Kearns post office from when I arrived in '87 until he retired, also playing in some pickup basketball games with him and some of the Kearns crew. Dave was quite the character and I always loved the guy. He will be missed.
