DAVID LUNDQUIST Obituary

David Ross Lundquist 1930 ~ 2010 David Ross Lundquist passed away on May 2, 2010 from heart and kidney failure. He was 79. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Roscoe Alexander and Jean Louise Fowler Lundquist on June 23, 1930, David graduated from South High School where he excelled in sports and played baseball with the state champion Cubs. Going on to play baseball for the University of Utah, David was drafted into the army in 1951 and served in Korea during the war. Returning home from Korea, David met and married Charlene Lillian Rowser in the Salt Lake Temple on June 1, 1956. They had three children and were later divorced. A veteran of the Korean War, David retired from military service with the rank of Major in the Army Reserves and throughout his life imbued in his children an abiding love and reverence for God, family, and country. An educator by profession, David held a bachelors degree and two masters degrees from the University of Utah. He was a long time member of the Crimson Club and was a "Utah Man" through and through. David's career was in education, but his interest was in developing others, especially youth. As a coach and later counselor in the Salt Lake City School District, David's greatest sense of accomplishment was not in administration, but in the youth he coached, taught, and counseled. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, David served in many leadership positions, but his most fulfilling callings involved working with youth and coaching the young men to stake and region championships in basketball and softball. Above all, David was a deeply devoted father, known for his soft and subtle humor, and his generous heart. David is survived by his sister Barbara (James) Reed, his children Lori (David) Evans, Susan Lundquist, and David (Kay) Lundquist, a nephew, Michael Reed, a niece, Diana (Bart) Payne, seven grandchildren: Ashlee (Tommy) Chapman, Amanda (David) Noland, Alyssa (Dan) Golden, Ryan Evans, Stephen Lundquist, Scott Lundquist, and Libby Lundquist, and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at the Cottonwood 10th Ward, 4930 S. Westmoor Rd. (1665 E.), on Friday, May 7 at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, on Thursday, May 6 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.

I attended Glendale Jr. High from 1973-75. I was one of six kids, and we all had Mr. Lundquist as a teacher or a counselor. How sad I was to open the Tribune and see Mr. Lundquist's obituary Thursday. How apprpriate, however, that he died during Teacher Appreciation Week. I am truly grateful for all Mr. Lundquist did for me. I was troubled and he really tried to help me, even if I did not want to listen. Mr.Lundquist's kindness made a dirrerence in my life. I am now a junior high teacher. May God bless you and your ramily, Mr. Lundquist.

I am so sorry for your loss. I remember Mr. Lundquist from Glendale like so many other people. He was such a remarkable person. I was one of his aides in 9th grade and he gave me a beautiful gift at Christmastime. I didn't expect a gift. It was a beautiful little ceramic vase. I cherished that vase and kept it for as long as I could and after having children and dogs it was broken. As a "bad kid" he helped me to turn into a good student because I didn't want to let him down. My prayers are with all of you as you say goodbye to a wonderful caring man.

I was very sad to see that Mr. Lundquist had passed away. I knew him as a counselor in my Junior High School. He took a young girl who was not heading in the right direction and put me back on track. I always had great respect and appreciation for him. 40 some years later and I still remember the impact he had on me. I wished I had taken time to thank him. A little late, but Thank You Mr. Lundquist, you were the GREATEST.

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of Dave. I love this man! As a youth and member of the Cottonwood 10th ward, I was extremely blessed and forever impacted by his Christ-like life, loving example and cleaver tutelage. To this day, he is one of a handful of men that powerfully influenced my life for good. My thoughts and prayers are with his wonderful family this week.

Winkie and I were very saddened by Dave's passing. Our prayers are with Barbara, Lori, Susan ad David as well as their families. We will miss, as they will, Dave's rye sense of humor. We loved the guy and greatly enjoyed our years together in our "special interest" group.

We are visiting grandchildren in New York so we will not be able to attend the viewing or the funeral but please place our names on the list of those who are there in spirit.
