David McDaniel Obituary

David Knox McDaniel 1948 ~ 2007 Dave McDaniel was born in 1948 in Oakland California and it was evident early in his life that he was unusual. He was not interested in sports or other typical childhood pursuits. Instead, Dave loved music and electronics. He got his first small transistor radio at about age 9 and kept it with him constantly, holding it closely to his ear so he could hear as much as possible. Then he had to know how radios work, so he took it apart. By age 12, Dave was taking apart the family television, much to the dismay of his parents. Soon thereafter, however, Dave was not only taking televisions apart, but was also putting them back together. Dave developed a reputation with neighbors and friends as "the kid who could fix your television", and the family received many calls and many TV's were repaired. Throughout his life, Dave was involved in building and fixing all kinds of electronic equipment. His early love for radio continued also and he spent much of the latter part of his life participating in amateur radio broadcasting. Although Dave had a remarkable ability with electronics, musical talent was his most amazing gift. When he began playing the stand-up bass in fourth grade, his skill was immediately obvious. He evolved to the bass guitar a few years later and played in several local bands throughout his high-school years. To those of us with untrained ears, Dave seemed to be pretty good. Little did we know how good he really was? Dave left Salt Lake at age 19 to attend North Texas State University to study music, but was there only a short time before deciding to join a band and hit the road, traveling throughout the country playing his music. During this period Dave had little contact with family, although we heard enough from him to know that it was a challenging road he was on. Then one day he called to tell us that he had been hired to play with Sonny & Cher. He stayed with Sonny & Cher and played on their television show for a number of years. Dave went on to record albums with Joe Cocker, Wayne Shorter, Olivia Newton John, Jennifer Warnes, the Don Ellis Band and played with Frank Sinatra, Johnny Paycheck and many more well known artists. He was also once featured on the cover of Guitar Player magazine. Dave was warm-hearted and was always willing to help a friend in need. He traveled the beat of a different drum, lived a courageous independent life and trusted in Christ. Dave died January 25, 2007 of heart disease and is survived by his mother Joy McDaniel; brother Jeff McDaniel; sister-in-law Sarah McDaniel and nephews Sean and Joe McDaniel. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 23rd at 3:00 p.m. at Liberty Park Four Corners Church (662 East 1300 South) after which friends are invited to the home of Sarah and Jeff McDaniel to remember Dave and celebrate his life.

Dave, The Bassman, a cool guy that went out of his way to assist a trumpet player as he tried to get his music degree. I met Dave thru the CB radios we all had in our area north of LA, CA. Turned out we had 2 things in common CB & music. He introduced me to the “serious” part of Beatles songs. How they were constructed along with anecdotes about the recording of them. My wife hears me talk about Dave quite a bit and she asked me what albums he had played on. I could only recall three so I decided to look him up. So very sorry to hear he had passed. Such a cool cat. See ya on the flip side, Dave.

Dave fixed my stereo and my radio. I saw him play at Six Flags once, plus on TV with Sonny and Cher. RIP, Dave.

Dave and I played together so many times during the 70's. We were both in the Don Ellis band and quit on the same night as to play on a Joe Cocker album. So much more but as to not hog space, simply put, Dave was an incredible bassist!!!!!!!!!!! We wre very good friends in that era and I always dug his humor. He will surly be missed by all.

A shocking revelation at the 40th reunion of our high school class . . I just heard the news and I'm saddened at the loss of such a great friend and musician . . Dave and I played the same instrument so never worked in the same band together but his influence and inspiration were amazing (I nearly quit - he was so good). His personality and music will always be remembered fondly . . .

I think I actually met Dave in person a handful of times, but over the past 20 years have had numerous "unusual" telephone conversations with him. I loved it when he would call, tell a joke or pose a trivia question and then just hang up! On those "rare" occasions when I could get him to stay on the phone for more than 5 minutes, half way through he would say "you're on the air". I loved Dave for his compassion and his eccentric ways. He was a good friend with a big heart. I will never forget those phone calls! "McD", you will be missed more than you know.

I always loved it when we were on the same gig . Dave could be a bit distracted , there was the time he put his bass on top of his car and then , drove off .Oh well . He was a great musician .

It was my pleasure to know David, and as a fellow bass player we often traded gigs with different high level artists and bands over the years. I'll always remember not only his skill as a musician but his keen intellect and sharp wit. God bless you David, I know you've found peace now with the Father.

Dave was a trusted musician. You could trust him to play music with the taste and skill of a master. I miss him and will miss him for some time. Bye Dave

David was a great friend, and I must say he was the very best bass player for my songs that I ever knew. I met Dave back in the Joe Cocker recording days in the early seventies, he eventually joined our band, "The Moore Brothers", and for several years he kept showing up to play bass for us in the Los Angeles area. Jim Price actually introduced him to us while he was producing one of several Joe Cocker albums. I last heard from Dave about a year ago, he would often call and just talk about mutual friends or he would send a CD copy of old Moore Brothers recordings he had found in his old box of tapes from the distant past. I feel a loss and a sadness that he is gone. Have a good journey "Disco Dave".

David is the only good friend I have ever had whom I never met personally. I had a lively communication with him on the phone, via phone messages and through snail mail. He was a fine bass guitarist and was passionate about music. Dave was also a strong supporter of Local 104, American Federation of Musicians, Salt Lake City. He always had a good word, and I, along with Local 104, mourn his loss. His death is a profound loss to Salt Lake City's vibrant musical community.

We are truly sorry to hear of David's passing. There were countless evening we danced to his music late into the evening. The SLC area has lost a truly talented individual. However, I am sure he has found a group to jam with as we remember him now. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time. His talent and personality will long be remembered and missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Dave was a great example to many of us at the musicians union (AFM Local 104)he was a gifted bass player and great supporter of the union and union music. We talked on the phone many times though we never met in person. Our condolences to the family and as Dave often said, "See ya on the Radio".

I grew up on Harvard Ave., around the corner from Dave & Jeff. I spent time with Dave as a teen & went to Park City with him to play at a gig. I have thought about him many times in my life & am sorry I never connected with him. My condolences are with your family at this time.

My condolences to the family. A great loss to the world of music. I did not know him personally, but I knew of his reputation in the industry, being a bass player, as well as living in Salt Lake City, from 1953 to 1971.
