Dawn Mangum Obituary

1920 ~ 2017
Bountiful, UT -We know that our Mom, Hazel Dawn Turner Mangum, was grateful and excited to return to Heavenly Father and her husband, Claud Darwin Mangum, who predeceased her by seven years. Her joyful day came in her own home in Bountiful, Utah on Sunday, the 1st of January 2017, after 96 years of serving and loving others. She dearly loved her parents, James Collier Turner and Hazel May Oldroyd Turner and was proud of her pioneer heritage.
Dawn loved Lyman and all of Wayne County, Utah where she was born on 26 April 1920, the second of eight children. She was raised in Lyman during the depression and she never forgot the lessons of frugality learned at that time. She and Claud were married on the 18th of June 1941 in the Manti Temple. All Mom ever wanted was to live a quiet existence in Wayne County, but her marriage and circumstances would change everything.
Dad joined the Army in 1941, then after the War he and Mom lived in Logan while Dad attended college. After Dad graduated from college and Mom graduated from the LDS Institute it was back to Wayne County where Dad taught Seminary for five years. Claud was recalled by the Army in 1951, and they decided to make a career of military service. They lived in Virginia, Germany, Texas, Washington, D.C., Utah, Hawaii, Pennsylvania and Kentucky. When Dad retired as a full Colonel they settled in Bountiful, Utah, but left once again to serve two years as missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Uruguay, were soon transferred to Argentina, and then Dad was called as a Regional Representative (Area Authority) for five regions in Argentina. When they were released, they came back to Bountiful for a short period before they were called to serve in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where Dad was the Mission President. Finally Dawn was able to return to her Bountiful home. She loved her home, good neighbors, and being closer to family.
Dawn did exquisite handwork making lovely crocheted and tatted items, arts she learned from her mother and grandmother. She also pieced and then hand quilted beautiful quilts for each of her 14 granddaughters. Dawn served her Church in many capacities including being Relief Society President at Fort Hood, Texas; Fairfax, Virginia; Carlisle, Pennsylvania; Clarksville, Tennessee; and at the North Canyon Care Center in Bountiful; as well as serving as Stake Relief Society President in Hawaii.
Dawn is survived by her four children, Claudine (Wayne) Cable of Bountiful, Richard (Carole) Mangum of Prescott, Arizona, Shawna (Jack, deceased) Brooks of Bountiful and D. Karl Mangum of Vernal, Utah as well as her sister, Claudia King, a brother-in-law, Meeks Morrell, and BetteLou Turner, a sister-in-law. She has 22 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She especially loved little babies.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Claud D. Mangum; a granddaughter Cherie Johns; six siblings: Venita Turner, Mark and Rula Turner, Willis and Luana Turner, Scott Turner, LaWana Morrell, Mabel and Klar Jorgensen; brother in law, Don Emery King.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Brother Carl Rasmussen who has served Mom and Dad as their Home Teacher for many, many years. He always went far above and beyond what was required and we are so very grateful for all he did.
