Jean Bennett Obituary

Jean Tomlinson Korner Bennett 7/4/1921~6/27/2006 The end of an Era On April 17, 2006, Jean died peacefully while traveling in India with a favorite niece, Judy Tomlinson Jones of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jean was born and raised in SE Wisconsin by Hilda Louisa (nee Schuck) and Clifford Edward Tomlinson. Jean was a proud graduate of the occupational therapy program at Downer College in Milwaukee (Now part of Lawrence University). Jean's career took her to several places. During World War II, while in Hawaii she met her first husband Ija Korner. Jean and Ija married in 1947 and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1949. Their marriage of 32 years produced Jean's only child Kim, also born in 1953 on July 4. Kim was born in Salt Lake City, while his father was a professor of psychology at the University of Utah. During that time Jean was the director of O.T. at the Salt Lake City General Hospital. The Korners all enjoyed skiing, hiking, climbing, and many other outdoor activities. Their family enjoyed traveling together. Their travels took them to the Northwest Territories of Canada, Central America, and many countries in Europe. They resided in India for a year, while Ija was on a Fulbright Scholarship. Ija died in Mexico on January 18, 1978, while with a group of University of Wisconsin - Green Bay students. After Ija's death, Jean and Kim relocated to Austin, Texas where Kim received his Ph.D. Kim, an assistant professor of computer sciences at Mill's College in Oakland California, was tragically killed while cycling on June 27, 1993. Jean married a close friend of the family in 1980, James Bennett. He was also an avid skier and climber. Jimmy's two beautiful daughters Vivienne and Dina were reared close to Jean's son Kim. Jean and Jimmy relocated from the east coast to Salt Lake City to enjoy old and new friends and beautiful environs. Jean and Jimmy Bennett also traveled extensively during their 24 years of marriage. After a brief illness Jimmy died on April 1, 2004. Both Ija and Jim were Austrian Holocaust survivors. Jean was a very loyal friend and adventurous woman. Even after the death of her two husbands and son she continued to lead an amazing life. She continued to enjoy one of her true passions, traveling. Her travels included Peru, Vietnam and finally India. For 50 years Jean also spent time in her family retreat in the Selkirk Mountains of Canada. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, her son, brother Donald (Lael) Tomlinson of Salt Lake City, and her sister Doris Tomlinson of Wisconsin. Jean is survived by her family's close friend Jack Potts, M.D. Her brother Cliff ("B") Tomlinson of Monterey, California, her two step-daughters Prof. Vivienne Bennett of San Diego, Dina Bennett of northern Colorado, her three nieces Carol, Missy, and Judy and many wonderful friends. Jean will be greatly missed by her friends and family.
