John McDonald Obituary

October 7, 1929 ~
November 5, 2017
Always the gentleman, cheerful and pleasant with a smile for everyone, John Dermott McDonald slipped away to check out the golf courses in the great beyond on Sunday, November 5, 2017. His passion was our magnificent "out of doors world' and the game of golf which he played so well, having made four certified "holes in one" before he put his golf away for the last time. John's tip, in case you care, is "a perfect golf swing is all in the shoulders". In addition to golf, John was exceptionally talented at every sport he ever tried, especially basketball and bowling.
John was born October 7, 1929, the first son of John Alexander and Donna Ivory McDonald. He was a kind and supportive big brother to his younger brothers, Dennis and George McDonald (Margo), and two younger sisters, Kathleen McDonald Stout (Mason) and Patricia McDonald Campbell (Courtney). John's extended family of nieces and nephews, in-laws, and cousins were always important to him. He attended East High School and the University of Utah. Salt Lake City was always John's home where he worked for the State of Utah as a surveying engineer on state road construction until he retired to the green fairways of the golfing world. For the past couple of years John suffered with dementia and it was his association with fellow golfers and their games that made his days complete. We thank those who played golf with him and those in charge at the Forest Dale Golf Course for their loving patience and kindnesses! He loved his friends and golfing buddies who were always supportive and encouraging with him. We also thank his faithful care-givers at the Abbington Care Center for their devoted assistance in getting John happily through each new day this past year. We offer a very special "thank you" to his loyal friend Roni. A graveside service will be held at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive in Salt Lake City at 3:00PM on Saturday, November 11, 2017.

My dad played a lot of golf with John, Cliff and the boys at Forest Dale for many years when I was a kid. I used to tag along as often as possible because I loved being part of their world. John was such a good guy with a great sense of humor! A reoccurring joke on the course involved my name, Preston; Everybody called me Pres. If John wanted to press his bet with my dad, he would pull up next to our cart and say, "Rab, what´s your boy´s name again?!" He got dad a few times. John, I hope you, Cliff and Rabbit are enjoying golf together wherever you are, I can´t wait to join your foursome, some day. RIP!

Your dignity and grace brought so much to my life. Thank you for convincing me to change my golf grip and to enjoy the game and not take it so serious. Maybe the next time we play you'll let me drive the cart. Love you John and miss my sweet friend.

I remember all the good times & lunches we shared together. You are one of a kind. Enjoy your new golf courses & there still is time for another hole in one.
