Lewis Emmerich

Lewis Emmerich Pioneer of America's Space Program  Lewis ("Lew") Emmerich, an early pioneer of the Apollo Space Program and recipient of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Apollo Achievement Award, died on February 10, 2004 in Salt Lake City, UT. His death was a result of complications from cancer.  Lew dedicated 28 years to America's Space Program, working for General Dynamics, a NASA contractor, as a Program Director, in San Diego, CA and Quincy, MA. His contributions spanned from the first manned space flight through man's first step on the moon.  Lew shared his knowledge and experiences in the space program as a guest lecturer at Harvard University's Science and Public Policy Seminar and on national television programs. After leaving the Space Program, he managed programs for many corporations such as Servo Corp. in Long Island, NY, Envirotech Corp. in Salt Lake City, and Timpte Industries in Denver, CO.  For the remainder of his career, Lew was the President and CEO of Spartan Consulting Group in Salt Lake City, a business consulting firm that he began for both private and government concerns. His clients included Sears, Roebuck and Co., ITT Technical Institute, OilTech, Inc., and the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Committee. Along with the Transportation Management Association of Utah, Lew helped to create the transportation plan for the Salt Lake 2002 Olympics and was a recipient of the 2003 UTA Commuter Vision Award. Lew also held numerous board positions on Salt Lake City municipal committees, including the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. Lew held Engineering and Business degrees from Purdue, UCLA, and Harvard universities. He served in World War II as a U.S. Army Communications Sergeant and was also a private pilot and avid sailor. He loved to take family and friends sailing on Lake Dillon, Colorado, or on the Great Salt Lake where he was a member of Sailor's World of America. Lew was predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Dorothy Faith Timmers. He and Dorothy are survived by their children, John H. Emmerich, his wife Barbara; James V. Emmerich; Jane E. Emmerich, her husband David; and grandsons, Paul, Ryan, Ben, Nathan, and Michael. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Walter and Billie Emmerich and his sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Marat Kaufman. Lew also leaves many devoted friends where he had lived and worked in California, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, Texas, and Utah. A memorial service will be held for Lew at Larkin Sunset Gardens, at 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy on February 21, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation on Lew's behalf to your local United Way chapter.
