Lorin Jones Obituary

Lorin Vaughn Jones 1929 ~ 2004  ST. GEORGE, UT - Lorin Vaughn Jones passed away Saturday, February 21, 2004, at his home in St. George, Utah, after a courageous battle with cancer. Lorin was born January 28, 1929, in St. George, Utah, to William Vaughn and Isabelle Leavitt Jones. He married Ferral Leavitt February 28, 1947, in Veyo, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George L.D.S. Temple.  Ferral and Lorin spent their early married years in Veyo, Utah, where he worked at various hydro-electric plants in the area. The young family moved to Bishop, California, when Lorin accepted work with California Electric. They later resided in Redlands, California, where Lorin worked for Nevada Power Company until his retirement in 1984. Lorin served in a variety of community activities, and especially enjoyed serving for over 20 years as a director for credit unions in the Las Vegas area. Following his retirement from Nevada Power, Lorin accepted employment with Western States Coordinating Council in Salt Lake City. He retired a second time six years later. Lorin enjoyed politics and was elected as Utah State Senator for District 29, serving Washington and Iron Counties. He served in that position for four years.  Lorin especially loved the town of Veyo and its residents and devoted an extensive amount of time volunteering for various causes there including the Veyo Culinary Water Association, Veyo Park, Veyo Community Arena, the Veyo Cemetery and the recently renamed Lorin V. Jones Community Center. He was also a charter member of the Veyo Cinder Valley Lions Club. Lorin was a board member of the Rural Water Association of Utah for many years. Lorin spent his life caring and providing for his family and dear friends. His testimony of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was evident in his humble and willing service. Lorin and Ferral always worked at a project, be it building a ward meetinghouse, assisting ailing family members, building homes, renovating properties, or supporting full-time missionaries. If Lorin saw a need in his family or community, he prepared a plan, organized support, kept meticulous records, and saw it through to a successful conclusion. Through his example, he taught his children to work, contribute to worthy causes, support and promote community-enhancing events, and enjoy the results of their labors. Lorin is survived by his beautiful bride of 57 years, Ferral Leavitt Jones, Veyo, Utah; sons Russell Lorin (Maria) Jones, of San Diego, California; Melvin Royce (Jill) Jones of St. George; Kevin Vaughn (Tina) Jones of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and daughter, Kristine (Allan) Carter of St. George; 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; sisters LaVerne J. (Lee) Hirschi, Alice J. (David) Dobbs, Maurine (Edmund) Hoff; and brother, H. Keith (Mary) Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at 1 p.m., at the Veyo LDS Chapel. Interment will be in the Veyo City Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary 435-673-4221. Condolences may be sent through our website at www.metcalfmortuary.com  The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Veyo Cemetery Fund, 177 E. Center Street, Veyo, Utah 84782.
