Margo Bates Obituary

MargoBates A celebration of life and service  Margo Bates passed away peacefully at her long time home in Salt Lake City on August 1, 2004, at the age of 65. Margo was born in American Fork, Utah, the daughter of Harold C. Bates and Iris Warr Bates. She attended Salt Lake City Schools, graduating from East High School. After graduation she joined the United States Navy, serving her Country honorably as a Hospital Corpsman for four years, including long periods of sea duty, crossing the Atlantic 44 times. After her discharge she returned to school at Weber State University, where she earned a degree in Medical Technology. Her successful career as a Medical Technologist spanned over 30 years, beginning with the St. Marks Hospital and then to the Associated Regional University Pathologists in Salt Lake City. She retired in 2000. Demonstrating her lifelong practice of service to her community, Margo was a prominent and active member of several charitable and service organizations Salt Lake City. She was a longtime member of the Gateway Chapter of the Business and Professional Women. She served in many capacities for the local chapter, was Woman of the Year in 1992-1993.  She also served the Utah State BPW organization in leadership capacities, including its President in 2003-2004.  Margo was also a leader in the Sarah Daft Home, a 501© (3) organization which owns and operates a senior retirement center in Salt Lake City. She was a member of that organization's Board of Trustees, served a Committee Chair, and was a prominent and successful fund raiser in the many events sponsored by Sarah Daft Home. Another example of her altruism and service was her volunteer work at the Allen B. Warr Memorial Park in Erda, Utah, supporting slow pitch softball.  She was known to be a tireless worker, always with good humor, good ideas and always an infectious ethic of giving back and making a better life for others. Margo is survived by her brothers, Gary Bates, of Salt Lake City, Utah; LeRoy Bates, of Heber, Arizona; and Laren Bates, of Surprise, Arizona, along with numerous nieces, nephews.  She will be cremated and a private celebration of her life will be held at a later date. All who knew Margo were blessed and will forever remember a woman who gave back to her family, her work, and her community in an exemplary and selfless manner.

Aunt Margo became a part of my family a little over 20 years ago when her brother (LeRoy Bates) and my mother (Joyce Goree) were joined in marriage. I will miss Aunt Margos sweet smile and bubbly face.

I wish we could all have enjoyed one last Chinese meal together (that she delightfully prepared). I wish I could have said thank you once again for her thoughtfulness towards me. I wish I could have said I love you one last time. Aunt Margo will be deeply missed and memories of her cherished always! My prayers and love to all.

Margo was a fine lady and made the best peanut brittle. I tried by could never match her. It won't be the same without her. I was fortunate that Laren and Sue shared Margo with me while in Georgia. She was a true lady in all ways. I will miss her.

Margo was a wonderful and warm person. I had attended conferences with her and was State President of BPW/Vt at the same time she was State President. She will be missed but always loved.

I had the opportunity to visit with Margo at our BPW/USA Conference in Ft Lauderdale in July. She was such a gracious lady and full of fun and life. She will be missed, but I am thankful that I had a chance to meet and get to know her as a fellow state president of BPW.

I knew Margo since 1987. She was a real philanthropist and a great humanitarian in its true sense. She loved to be with people and do her best for them. It is indeed difficult to lose such a fried and a colleague. Margo will be surely missed.

I was so sorry to hear of Margo's untimely death. I was privileged to have recently traveled with Margo to Florida for the BPW national convention. I have been to many other conventions with Margo and I will certainly miss her. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Margo was such an example to me and I will miss her very much. I will be forever grateful that I had the opportunity to travel with her to Florida just less than a month ago. She had volunteered to be my traveling companion this coming year as I serve as the BPW Utah State President and I will miss not having her with me. She touched the lives of so many and I hope that I can use her example in my own life.
