Mark Savarise Obituary

Dr. Mark T. Savarise

1965-2024

Park City, UT-On the evening of July 2nd, Mark Savarise, MD, MBA, FACS, 58, passed after a yearlong valiant battle with non-smokers lung cancer in Salt Lake City. Mark was born October 5th, 1965, in Buffalo, NY to Thomas John and Carole Helen (Niklas) Savarise. He married his best friend and love of his life, Yvonne Schmidt, in September of 1989.

Mark completed his undergraduate education (1987) and Medical School (1991) at the University of Colorado. After his surgical residency at the University of Utah, Mark served four years in Biloxi, MS, as a US Airforce Medical Corp Staff surgeon attaining the rank of Major. After his military service, Mark chose to pursue the life of a rural surgeon in Sandpoint, Idaho. He loved the challenges and independence of working and living in a small community. In 2013, he was recruited to the University of Utah to develop a community based surgical practice in South Jordan. There, Mark filled the roles of Medical Director of Outreach and Network Development as well as Section Chief. He also worked at the VA Hospital in Salt Lake caring for veterans. Mark was a Clinical Professor for the Department of General Surgery training and mentoring numerous residents and medical students. He was most in his element in his role as educator, twice receiving the Outstanding Educator Award from the surgical residents.

During the past few years, as a member of the Center for Global Surgery, Mark introduced laparoscopic techniques to surgeons in Cambodia and Ethiopia.

Throughout his career, Mark was very involved and committed to his work with the American College of Surgeons. He served on many committees including Chair of the Young Fellows Association, Health Policy, and the Advisory Council for Rural Surgeons. One of his career highlights was being selected to the Board of Regents in 2021.

Aside from his surgical practice, his life was filled with many passions including traveling, skiing, mountain biking, hiking, and raising German Shepherds. He shared these activities with his wife Yvonne.

Mark is survived by his wife Yvonne, his four-legged companion Shiloh, sister Jill (Joe) Gimbel, brother David (Meredith), sister Jennifer, father Tom (SanDee), nephews and nieces Jacob, Zack, Holly, and Bella.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Mark has requested in lieu of flowers to contribute to Greenhouse Scholars, the International Mountain Biking Association or Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

My friend Mark was the quintessential renaissance man. He could converse on any subject from the Khmer Rouge to what they served at a cocktail party in the 60´s. He was the ultimate handy man fixing my screen door in 20 minutes, I timed him, to putting up a shed without instructions. He worked hard, he played harder and he enjoyed the company of friends and family. His love for his wife and animals was his greatest gift. I consider myself lucky to have known him if only for a short time. A true friend indeed.

Yvonne, you and Mark and I met briefly when we biked the Camino in Spain. I remember both of you as being so friendly and willing to take on a "spare," totally amateur rider. Mark even taught me the value of a good chapstick! I know he was well loved and will be sorely missed. My heart is with you.

Thank you Mark ... for many, many years, of good friendship. You inspired me, in so many ways, to be the best that I could be. You taught me so many valuable lessons in Life. You paved so many paths, for others to follow. You were always a kind and gentle Man, especially towards Animals, Seniors and Children, and they loved you so much. Nobody better than Animals, Kiddos and Seniors, to judge the character of a Man ! You lived a very good Life, one that was full of Love and Kindness, Gentleness, Humility, Simplicity and Minimalism ... and lots of good Vino ! You gave much, much more, then you ever took. The World is a much better because of you. Thank you for a wonderful Life

Dr Savarise was the first doctor I needed when I moved back to Utah and he epitomized everything I would want in a healthcare provider or would want to be. I had the privilege of also working with him on occasion at the VA and he also treated my mother. He was adored by all who worked with or for him and he was an excellent surgeon who took excellent care of his patients. He will be missed deeply. How lucky we were to have him as a provider, teacher, colleague, member of our community. People like him don't come along often.
