Paul Slater Obituary
Paul Wheeler Slater
1932-2025
Paul Wheeler Slater, affectionately known as "Slate" by his students, the athletes he coached, and the young people in his church, passed away peacefully at his home on September 6, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on August 30, 1932. Paul lived a life defined by genuine kindness, faith, and devotion to family and community.
Paul was a man deeply rooted in faith. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he fulfilled many callings and was sealed in the temple to his wife, Ann. His devotion to his church community was matched only by his compassion-he reached out to others regardless of differences, extending friendship and kindness where others might not.
He was also a devoted husband. Ann often said she believed she had "married the kindest man on earth," and she meant it. Paul was a steady and gentle presence, providing love, stability, and support to his family throughout his long life.
A beloved teacher and coach, Paul dedicated his career to physical education, where his students not only learned skills on the court and mat but also life lessons through his example. Many fondly called him "Coach"-not merely as a title, but as a name called out with exuberance and affection, often the way friends might joyfully greet someone beloved. His spontaneous words carried gentle wisdom, and his sincerity earned him the trust and admiration of those around him.
Beyond the classroom and church, Paul's passions were many: a lifelong love of sports, from playing and coaching to cheering on teams; taking his children on motorcycle rides and riding horses alongside them; and evenings spent around a chessboard with family. He was known for his generosity, his positivity, and his unwavering support of his children and grandchildren. His children honored him by giving each of their firstborn children "Paul" as a middle name-a tribute chosen without his prompting, a sign of their deep love, respect, and admiration for their father.
Paul's family was the center of his life. He is survived by his wife, Ann; and his children, Mike Slater, Heidi Slater, Jeff Slater, and Cheryl Robinson, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Millie Slater, his siblings Vernal and Kathleen, and many dear friends and relatives who welcomed him home.
Paul often reminded others, "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still," a reflection of his wisdom in avoiding fruitless arguments and instead choosing peace. More than anything, he was a man at ease in his own skin-the steady rock of his family and a source of love and stability to all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Cottonwood Heights Stake Center, 1845 E 7200 S, Cottonwood Heights, UT 84121.
