I was Jeff's high school wrestling coach and that's how I first met Eldon & Phyliss. However, I never really got to know them until later, as they kept in the background. They were old-school parents, letting me do my job while they did theirs. What a concept. Phyliss ended up being one of my lawn-cutting customers more recently, and we engaged in many a weekly light-hearted battle as to the length she wanted it cut. I suggested leaving it a tad on the long side so as to better survive the summer heat, while she preferred it cut short. Let's just say I had a losing record against her. She always had a cold drink ready for me when I pulled up. The end of an era. Rest in peace, Phyliss.

Just love Phyllis! Always visiting those that needed visits, even when I thought she should be home resting. Such a good friend of my grandmother, Jean Fulghum. Thanks for your service, you made it look easy!

As I type this message I look out the window at Rangitoto and such sweet memories flash by. Such a bittersweet time for all. The Smart family has been one of the greatest families ever! Eldon and Phyllis showed love and compassion to everyone they knew. Never have I seen such Christ-like service. Phyllis led the pack with her kindnes and love for everyone. Thanks for coming into our lives at such a tender and influential time. Never had I loved the Pagoda like I did with the Smarts at 9o'clock on a Wednesday night!! Thanks for raising such great men and women..we will never forget you! Until we meet again....

Dear Smart Family,
Please know that your angel mother was truly that of an "angel. I was able to visit with Phyllis on the 27th of July. I expressed my love to her at that time. She was a great example of what a friend and assume visiting teacher should be,
She has been a true friend to my mother LuJean Christensen for many many years as long as they have lived in the Valley View Third ward. When my mother had a stroke in December of 2015 it was Phyllis that came to faithfully visit her every week and continued until most recently when Phyllis's health declined. At that time she called my mother three times a week to see how she was doing.
We will miss her and forever be thankful for her being a true and loving friend to our family.

Darrell .... So sorry for the loss of your dear Mother. A light in yours as well as many, many others lives.
Fond memories of summer sleep outs in your backyard followed by an epic pancake breakfast. It had to have made your Mom cringe having 3, 4, or more Jr High aged boys milling around her kitchen, but she never let on. She always made us feel welcomed in your home.
She was quite obviously amazing. Please accept my sincerest condolences, and my God always bless the Smart family.

Dear Smart Family:
Our deepest condolences to you at this time. Phyllis was a lovely person, a genuine friend to all and such a dedicated mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Jean is devastated at the loss of her dear friend. She shared a long and loving friendship with Phyllis. Jean always refers to Phyllis as her "angel." But she is taking comfort in her faith that she will soon see Phyllis again.
Thank you for sharing Phyllis with the world. We will miss her.

Dear Smart Family: I am saddened at the passing of your Mother. What a grand and special person she was, always happy and positive. We had such good growing up years with your family. The special relationship that our parents had gives me such beautiful memories. I wish you all peace knowing that she is reunited with Eldon,Jan,Nicole and Rick and many others that she loved so much. My best to you all. I won't be able to attend her service as we will not be in town. Give everyone my love. Laurie Winegar Thomsen

Phyllis and Eldon were such an amazing
couple and the warmth and love they
extended to their neighbors and ward
members (Wilson Ward) was outstanding.
I will always remember Phyllis and her
great smile and out going personality,
she always had kind words for those
around her and always found time for
others. She will be deeply missed by
family and friends.
