RICHARD JOHNS Obituary

Dr. Richard Elias Johns, Jr. 1943 ~ 2010 Dr. Richard E. Johns, Jr., loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, church leader and physician, passed away at his home in Bountiful, Utah on May 14, 2010 following a six-month battle with cancer.Dick was born on November 4, 1943 in Philadelphia, PA. He was the oldest son of six children in the family of Dr. Richard E. Johns and Virginia Harriett Johns. He attended Salt Lake City schools and graduated from East High School and the University of Utah with a degree in molecular and genetic biology. Dick furthered his education and graduated from medical school at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1972. Dick married Marianne Peterson on August 12, 1969 in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the proud parents of Lisa, Emily, Matthew, Kari, and Brian. His family always came first in his life. He created wonderful memories through numerous family trips, family nights at home and always made sure each child had one-on-one time with Dad. During his medical practice, Dick became Medical Director of the Davis County Health Department in 1972 and later worked for the Utah State Department of Health as the State Epidemiologist. He furthered his career by entering Occupational Medicine and became the Medical Director at the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of Utah. Dick went on to become the Medical Director for Thiokol/Alliant Tech Systems, from which he retired in 2005. He never truly stopped working, however, and continued consulting until March, 2010. Dick was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission in the Liverpool, North British Mission from 1964-1966. During that time he played baseball with the "Mormon Yankees" as first baseman and was once voted most valuable player. He later served as Scoutmaster, Bishop's Counselor and Bishop of the Mueller Park Fourth Ward and also held positions on the High Council and counselor of the Mueller Park Stake Presidency. Most recently he served on the missionary medical committee of the Church, and loved being a docent at the Museum of Church History for the past four years. Dick had a passion for life. He had a great love for sports and the outdoors. His grandchildren were his greatest joy, and he adored each one of them. He spent hours playing with them, going on hikes, planting the garden, four-wheeling, camping and other "dates with Grandpa." He spent many hours skiing, mountain biking, running, fishing, hiking, camping, and backpacking throughout the Wasatch Front, Uinta, and Wind River mountains, conquering any good peak or trail he heard of. He enjoyed playing baseball, tennis, racquetball, and golf; he even hit a hole-in-one. He had a strong desire to keep learning and, in addition to his continued studies in medicine, he pursued interests in history, photography, traveling and anything electronic. Dick never did anything halfway; everything he touched he worked hard at until it was mastered. Dick will be remembered as a great husband, father, grandfather and close friend to countless people. His family and friends learned from his example and the life he led. His example of faith, integrity, strength and perseverance, his compassion and service toward others and his great sense of humor have touched many people. Dick never gave up on anyone or anything and had the ability to bring life and laughter to any situation. Dick was preceded in death by his father, Richard E. Johns MD, a brother, David Johns and a sister, Julianne Johns Asay. He is survived by his wife Marianne Peterson Johns and their five children: Lisa Anne Callister, Emily (Taylor) Scalley, Matthew (Heather) Johns, Kari (Ryan) Christensen and Brian Johns. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren and twin grandsons who are expected in July. Additionally, he is survived by his mother, Virginia Smith Johns - brothers, Craig Johns (Becky), Stephen Johns (Sue), Todd Johns (Shiela) - sister, Dianne Johns Amott, and brothers-in-law, Ted Asay (Laura), and their families. Extended family includes David and Sharon Richards and Paul and Jeanette Clyde and their families. He was dearly loved by his nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Jonathan Whisenant and the Utah Cancer specialists at the Intermountain Medical Center, as well as Hospice provided from Community Nursing Services. In lieu of flowers please donate to the LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund. Funeral services will be held at the Mueller Park 4th Ward on Thursday, May 20th at 1:00 pm, 1320 E. 1975 S in Bountiful, Utah. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 19th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Russon Brothers Mortuary at 295 N. Main St. in Bountiful, Utah, and also one hour preceding the funeral at the church. Marianne,

I just learned today of Bishop Johns death. I remember him fondly as a wonderful next door neighbor and Bishop. He holds a special place in Marilyn and my hearts as the Bishop who sent me on a mission and also counseled with us as we prepared to be married. I saw the two of you from a distance at the Conference Center Christmas concert in December and wish now I had made an effort to get through the crowd and say hello. God Bless you and your family.

Marianne & Family:
We extend our condolenses at this time for the loss of Richard. Richard's father was a very good friend of my mother's, Norma Humphries, and they worked together at the LDS hospital.
My brother, Steve Humphries, was Richard's age and he sends his condolenses as well.

What a powerful talk given by President Eyring at Priesthood session of conference, on him being in your home a couple weeks before conference to give Richard a blessing of comfort.

Richard will be missed greatly and we pray that you may find peace and comfort in knowing that Richard is being a missionary and leader to all.

We love you,

David and Susan Miller

Dick was a wonderful cousin. I'll never forget running into your family in Nauvoo - we went so far away to connect when we live so close! Quite a reunion has taken place on the other side. May the Lord bless and comfort your family. Love Paul Anderson & Family

I knew Dick Johns through my training in Occupational Medicine at the University of Utah. Since leaving Utah in 2001, I have thought about Dick and the training he gave me. I think the most significant memory I have is of his seemingly perfect and harmonious mixture of kindness with strength, confidence with humility, and compassion with toughness. Although I knew Dick only briefly, it did not take long to note his fine character as a man and a physician. I know he is sorely missed and pray for God's peace and contentment for those in Dick's family who now mourn their loss.

Dear Johns Family, I served in the same mission as did Dr. Johns. We had such a good time. He was so inspirational to all of us on the "Mormon Yankees", and with his service to the people of England. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. My brother who is on a mission in Geneva Switzerland, made me aware of the obit. I was glad to read of all of the wonderful accomplishments of Elder Johns. Elder L. Corry Jones (St. George, Ut.)

To the John's Family,
I'm so sorry to hear of Dr. John passing away.

Dear Johns family,
I am sad to hear of Dr. John's passing, and extend my heartfelt sympathies to you. He is one of my heroes. As a young person, I looked up to him a great deal, and wanted to practice Occupational Medicine in part because of his influence and interest in me and because of the way he practiced medicine--with great integrity and accuracy. I owe a great part of the vocation that I love to his willingness to always share his love of knowledge. God bless your family for sharing him with so many others. Thank you Dr. Johns! Sincerely, Dr. Carla Olsen

I was saddened to learn of Dick's passing, it brought back fond memories of my experiences with him and the great example he was to me. I found great strength in Dick's abilities and it inspired me at a young age to deal with overcoming obstacles in my own life.

Johns Family,

I was very sorry to hear that Dr. Johns passed away. He was a good soul, and I will miss seeing him at the Rocky Mountain Center conferences. I have been an adjuster at WCF for many years, and had a good chance to talk to him. He was fond of saying that I drove him out of doing independent medical exams. He was losing sleep over one of my hard cases, and he said to himself that just realized he could not these exams any more. That shows his quality, how much he wanted to get it right, and to be fair to all parties concerned. In 2008, I had an accident and lost much of the use of my right hand and arm. I gained courage from his example. He leaves you a magnificent heritage. My heart goes out to you in your loss.

Johns Family,

Words cannot express the example and impact Dick has had in my life. Through his dedicated service as my scout master, he helped to shape my life into the husband and father I am today. As difficult as I was in scouts, Dick never gave up on me and the entire Eagle Patrol. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Love,
