Richard Rasmussen Obituary

Richard Frank Rasmussen 1935 ~ 2007 Richard Frank Rasmussen passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on Friday, November 2, 2007, within hours of returning home from traveling. He was 72. A successful businessman, gifted athlete, passionate artist, curious world traveler and devoted family man, Dick spent the last three weeks of his life with his loving wife, Jan, enjoying the sights of Eastern Europe and capturing the beauty of the world in his charming photographs. Affectionately known as "Rass" and "Papa," Dick was born June 21, 1935 to Frank R. and Dorothy Couch Rasmussen in Salt Lake City. In 1953, he graduated from East High School, where he lettered in several varsity sports and was honored as outstanding athlete of the year. He loved sports throughout his life. He attended the University of Utah on a football scholarship and also skied for the U of U ski team. In addition, Dick belonged to the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and was a member of the Utah Air National Guard. He married Jan Jones on November 6, 1959 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dick was president of Rasmussen Equipment Company from 1972 to 2007. He was active in the Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) and the Associated General Contractors of Utah (AGC). A talented golfer, he was a member of The Country Club and past president of the Alpine Country Club. A lifelong supporter of U of U athletics, Dick enjoyed traveling with the Crimson Club to support his Utes at the Fiesta Bowl and the Final Four. He and Jan loved touring the world and relished studying the history of diverse cultures. For the past 15 years, Dick has published an annual calendar of his photographs to share his sublime vision of the world with friends, family and business associates. His photographs, including a stunning shot of New York's World Trade Center taken September 10, 2001, hang in various Salt Lake buildings such as the Salt Lake County Complex, and he donated many fascinating landscape photographs to brighten the hallways at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Dick is survived by his wife Jan, four children, Jody McClain (Roger), Julie Reynolds (Bob) and Richard D. Rasmussen, all of Salt Lake City, and David R. Rasmussen (Heather), Naperville, IL; grandchildren John Rasmussen, Heather and Eric McClain, Alec and Mick Rasmussen and Scott Reynolds, and four step grandchildren; Bobby, Sharee, Jake and Sydney. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and by a sister, Susan. The family wishes to thank all of Dick's amazing friends for their love and support. Friends and family are invited to gather Thursday, Nove. 8, from 5-7 p.m. for a Celebration of a Life Well Lived at The Country Club, 2400 Country Club Dr., Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the U of U Athletic Department, 8125 E. South Campus Drive, Salt Lake City, UT 84112 or to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation, 500 Huntsman Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84108-1235.

Dear Rasmussen Family,

Like so many others I was suprized and saddened to hear the news of Dick's sudden passing. Although not an especially important person in Dick's life, he always treated me as if I were; a remarkable trait from a remarkable man! Dick always made me feel comfortable when ever visiting Rasmussen Equipment Company, taking time to share toughts on business, family and the good things in life. I count myself fortunate to have known Dick, and I will keep him in my memory always.

May God bless you!

Rasnussen Family,
I am sorry for your loss. My father had the great oppurtinty to work for Dick, he was my dad's boss & great friend for over 30 years. I would go in with my dad when I was little and everytime Dick said hi! The last visit to the office was with my sister & new nephew. My dad was in Dick's office and Dick saw the new addition to the family and gave us a big smile. I'm sure you already know what a wonderful man he was, and I know he will be missed by all.

I'm so sorry to hear of Dicks passing. I so enjoyed my many years of doing business with Dick and always looked forward to my visits to SLC. We traveled worked and went to sportig events together and dined more times than I can count.
I would like to share my most sincere memory of Dick. Dick invited me to play golf with him at the CC. When I arrived in town Dicks back was acting up and he was unable to play, which was fine with me we would visit do business and reschedule. He would have none of it we went to the CC and he drove the golf cart while I played 18 holes of golf. A sincere and gentle man and a true gentlemen I will miss you my friend.

Rasmussen Family,
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dick. Over the years I have had the privilage of doing business with Dick, traveling on company trips and playing golf with him. It was indeed a privilage to have been associated with him. His warm smile, generosity and love of travel will always be remembered.

I look up from my desk as I write this and look at a calendar published each year by Dick and it reminds me of his love of distant places and the people living there and our talks about common places we have both traveled to. I will certainly miss the yearly reminder of Dick but will miss the man more.

With sympathy,

Hi Jan:

Cynthia sent us Dick's obituary. We read it with so much sadness. It made us think of the years we lived on Kentucky Avenue as neighbors and good friends.

Too bad time rends the seam of our association but it always seems to do that. We send our love. We send our understanding,. We send our best. We will retain our tears. You will have plenty of those on your own.

Thanks for being such good neighbors.

My heart felt condolences to the Rasmussen family. I knew Dick as a fellow member of Pi Kappa Alpha. Dick was a senior when I was a freshman, so, naturally he was a hero to me. I learned a lot about life listening to the late night bull sessions led by the likes of Dick Rasmussen. He was always a great gentleman. I will miss him.

Dear Jan and Family,

Rass was one of the world's great guys. I admired him as a star athlete at East High School and was honored to become his close friend at the UofU. He taught me how to water ski and tried to teach me how to snow ski. I will always cherish the wonderful times we had water skiing at Bear Lake and the reservoir near SLC (whose name I can't remember). He also tolerated me on the golf course; never complaining as he tried to make up for my deficiencies at our club golf tournaments. Rass was a kind and gentle man, but could be counted on to use his diplomacy and strength when needed to bail out one of our mutual friends on our outings to places such as Bear Lake and Boulder, Colorado (for the UofU-CU football games). Rass was an amazingly gifted photographer. He had an amazing ability to compose magnificent scenes. I truly have never seen any professional who could do it any better. Dick was a lucky man to have you, Jan, as his wife. Smart, funny, loving and beautiful. Who could ask for anything more from life?

We will greatly miss him.

Sincerely,
Dave & Annette Jorgensen

It is with much sadness that I have learned of the loss of Dick, but it is with much joy that I appreciate his life and my good fortune of knowing him. Dick has been a loyal customer and friend. I always enjoyed hearing of his worldly travels and sharing his photography. He was adventuresome, knowledgable, and kind-hearted.
I shall miss visiting with him in our office and seeing his wonderful photos. If anyone could appreciate and celebrate life, it was Dick.

My sincere sympathy,

Dear Jan and Rasmussen Equipment Family,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of Mr. Rasmussen. On my near barren office walls hangs a calendar that is appreciated more than Dick would have known. The Rasmussen Equipment Calendar for me represents far more than the day of the week. Through the pictures of life and worldly sights I am daily compelled to pause to see what this personable man behind the lens wanted me to appreciate. Dick’s window on the world so graciously gifted to others revealed just a glimpse of his sharing character and fatherly temperament. In only having the opportunity for a handful of meetings with Dick across the recent few years, I share and appreciate your collective and profound loss for this loveable man.
May God Bless You All.

Please accept my condolences at this difficult time that you all face together and know that your family will be in my prayers.

Dear Jan, Jody, Julie, Dave, and Rich,
You have my sincere condolences. I was so shocked to hear the news, I can't even imagine how you felt. My thoughts are with you. I will always remember Dick as a good, kind person, and I was honored to work with him. Even after I left Rasmussen Equipment, he always encouraged me to finish my book - I still haven't done that yet, but maybe now I will - he asked me about it every time I saw him. He went out and found his dreams and lived them. Most people don't ever get that chance. I believe he lived a very full life. His photos are amazing and I'm glad that I saved all the calanders. I have even managed to aquire them each year after I left from an employee that remains a friend. Now I will have them to remember him by. I hope that the calanders will continue in future years. I know he had many, many extrodinary photos, and many will look forward to having them in the future, and thinking about Dick.
I hope that you all can get thru this and go on knowing that Dick was loved and respected by all he met. He will be missed by all who knew him, and probably by a lot who never even met him.
I wish there were words to make you all feel better, but I know there are not - time heals all they say - and in time, the hurt and the tears go away, and just the fond and loving memories remain, then you will think of him with a smile on your face, and just a tear or two every once in a while.
I hope that the love and support of family and friends can carry you thru this hard time.

Sincerely,
Sue Kelvington

I didn't really know this man but my husband works for him. My husband(Jeff Cardwell) talks very highly of this man. It is hard on the living when a loved one dies. I ask the good Lord Jesus Christ to be with each and every one of you at this time of morning. But always remember that he will always be apart of you for the memories you carry of him. Take peace in knowing he is at peace.

Dear Jan and Family, Our deepest sympathy--Rass leaves both of us with fond memories. So many years ago Rass was the catalyst for good times for a bunch of us Pi Kaps. Did anyone, ever, laugh more when having a good time, or was anyone ever more mischevious (he loved getting me seasick when water skiing). Rass' remarkable photos bring joy and knowledge of his art to us every day. We will miss Rass. Jan, the two of you make a wonderful couple. Joe and Joyce
