Robert Askew Obituary

1931 ~ 2012
On September 14, 2012, our father, grandfather and friend, Robert E. Askew, rejoined his loving wife and eternal companion, a reunion he so deeply desired. Robert was born on October 10, 1931, in Salt Lake City to his parents Ewart and Mildred Askew, one of two children. He spent a happy childhood in the Sugarhouse area, where as a child he was fascinated with airplanes and joined the Civil Air Patrol. He was also active in Scouting and earned his Eagle Scout award. Bob graduated from South High School in 1948. Bob honorably served our country as a Marine during the Korean War. He continued to serve his fellow veterans through his active involvement with the Disabled American Veterans, where he was State Commander and Adjutant. In 1955, while visiting his mother at the Paris Company, where she was employed, Bob was introduced to the love of his life, the beautiful JoLene Nielsen. They were married on June 10, 1955 in Salt Lake City and later sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple. Bob and JoLene purchased a home in Granger, Utah, where they resided for 57 years. Their home was always a warm and inviting place. Bob was employed for 40 years by Bonneville News Company. Bob and JoLene are the beloved parents of Ed (Linda) Askew and Pamela (Kevin) Fife and grandparents to twins Robert Eric and Michael Ray (both deceased), Chenille, Miquelle and Cody Askew and Justice Fife. Bob is also survived by his best friend Jim Cockayne, a friendship that lasted over 70 years.
Bob was preceded in death by his sweetheart, JoLene, who passed away only a year ago. Family and friends were the center of Bob's life. He enjoyed camping with his family in Daniels Canyon, where they would fish, hunt and ride tote goats, and bowling on Thursday nights in the Delton Lanes Guys and Gals League. Perhaps the best thing that can be said about a man at the conclusion of a long and fulfilling life is that he was a good man. Bob was an exceedingly good man.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 21 at 11:00 at the L.D.S. Chapel located at 3276 S. Hillsdale Drive in West Valley City. A viewing will be held prior to the services at 10:00 and on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Mountain View Memorial Estates Cemetery, 3115 East 7800 South, Cottonwood Heights.
