Robert Condie Obituary

Robert Alden Condie

1931-2021

I was born March 11, 1931 in SLC, UT to Richard Palfreyman and Blanche Mendenhall Condie. My siblings, Richard, deceased (Elaine, deceased), Joanne Stewart (Charles), Jeanette Pearson (Keith, deceased) and Douglas (Pamela) grew up on B Street in Salt Lake. I graduated from East High School. As a family we were taught the importance of a strong work ethic. At age 12, I spent summers on ranches in New Mexico, Idaho and Wyoming. Later, I worked construction in Teton and Yellowstone National Park. I spent 2 years at the University of Utah where I was a Sigma Chi. It was there that I met Mary Esther (Chris) Christensen. We were married April 23, 1954. Together we had 4 children; Shannon, Steven, Heather Kingsford (Tom) and Robyn Sargetakis (Manoli).

In 1951 I joined the USAF and graduated flight school at Nellis Air Force Base. As a fighter pilot I flew F80, F86A, EF Models and F100 A&C. I was 1 of 4 pilots selected to fly the F100 to George AFB. With several of my Airforce friends we captured our memories in the book "We Pushed the Limits".

After my time serving in AF, we returned to Utah. I received a BA in Banking and Finance from the University of Utah. I then worked for Chance Drilling Co in Houston, Texas for 2 years. In 1959, we again returned to Salt Lake where I started Pride Oil which I later sold to Gulf Oil. I became the district manager for Utah, Idaho and Nevada. During this time, I became a partner with Calvin E. Clark and Wally Wright. We built and operated the Rodeway Inn of Salt Lake, and in 1965, Calvin and I built and operated the Roadway Inn in Boise, ID.

In the late 1960's, I became involved in cutting horses, which quickly became my passion, second to flying. I was fortunate to own and show Docs Marmoset, who became the World Champion Cutting horse in 1981. The friends I made in the cutting horse circuit had a lot to do with my enjoyment and success. My involvement in horses prompted me to become interested in property in the Heber Valley. We trained cutting horses there and had beautiful access to the Provo River where we would enjoy fly fishing. Fishing was an important sport that I enjoyed with my children and grandchildren.

The last several years I have been honored to give back to the veterans through various activities. I became enthusiastically involved in the CR England Veterans Rally's.

I had a real interest in following my father's career with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. I thought it was important to document his accomplishments with the Choir under his direction, which included a Grammy Award and many Gold Records. This prompted me to co-author the book, "Under My Baton."

We have been blessed to have our children live near us for most of their lives. Holidays were always special, thanks to the efforts of Chris. We enjoyed many picnics, dinners and various celebrations. Some of our most memorable family events included annual trips to the R Lazy S Ranch in Jackson, Wyoming and staying with friends in Grace, Idaho during the local county fair. Later in life, I went from being a competitor to a spectator supporting grandkids in their activities.

My life has been blessed with a wonderful supportive family and many dear friends.

I am survived by my wife of 67 years, Chris; Children; Grandchildren; Robert Kingsford (Suzanne), Nathan Kingsford (Lisa), Steven and Kali Sargetakis, Marcus Davis-Condie, Michael Davis-Ipaktchian. Greatgrandchildren; Mae, Grace, Grant, Duke and Della Kingsford; Siblings

As a family we would like to provide special thanks to the following; St. Marks Cardiac Rehabilitation team, Dr. Phillip Kithas, Life Care Center, The Ridge Cottonwood, Canyon Hospice and Physical Therapists; Mark Aberton, Kyle Aberton and Randy Aragon

I learned a lot by flying with Bob that gave me basics that not only made me a better fighter pilot but helped me to be a better fighter squadron commander. It was always a great day after I retired to meet with Bob for lunch and talk about flying experiences especially his questions about my 130 combat missions over North Viet Nam. Bob was the BEST.

My first recollection of my Uncle Bob was when our family would come in from CALIFORNIA in the summers and connect with cousins Shannon, Steve,Heather,Robyn. That was always fun . It got a little more personal as I got into my teens and he seemed to take interest in what was going on for me. He would take me out to crik road and I would see how he was with his horses that was a beautiful thing. .I looked up to him in many ways.He was tall his presence was huge and personable he gave me work on helping build a barn one summer and I worked on fences and water up in Heber. He helped pay for my mission. I remember going to some horse cutting events and being in and around the arena . when his friends knew I was his nephew I felt my status got upgraded. I got to ride his horses not all of them but the ones that knew more than I did about what was going on in the arena. His love of family ,horses nature and so many things always made for interesting connecting and experiences. If there's a heaven and I believe there is I imagine him in the greenest of pastures on the best of rides and enjoying it all. Blessings on your journey into the infinite, thanks for the love interest help and care while you were here.Much love Charlie. Look forward to reconnecting with You all Chris ,Shannon, Steve,Heather,Robyn and Family

Mr. Bob Condie played a big role in my life growing up while I followed my father in the cutting horse circuit. I first remember meeting Mr. Condie when I was about 5 years old at the Erda arena, he entered with his briefcase and the information needed to help run the administration part of the cutting for the day before he prepared to compete. He was instrumental in forming the Utah Cutting Horse Association. I never felt comfortable calling him Bob, he was always Mr. Condie, just because of the respect I had for him. When Condie entered a room or arena, everyone felt his strong presence and he just naturally commanded a respect. During my high school years, I was blessed to work in the summers at Creek Road and the Heber Valley Ranch. Mr. Condie was very kind to me, always provided me encouragement and was very generous in my compensation. It was a real pleasure to see him with Doc Marmoset and he would have a different look in his eye when he was around her. We all made sure to give Marmoset extra special care on the rare occasions she was around. Mr. Condie was always a great host to many at his Heber Valley Ranch and was always a gentleman. My sincere condolences to the entire Condie family, may his legacy live on with all of you.

I had the privilege to know Bob as a member of the Pride Oil team serving as one those guys who back then "serviced" your vehicle pumping the gas, checking under the hood, washing the windows, and even sweeping out the floors with the whisk brush we carried in our back pocket! Bob would visit every service station once a week, inspect the service team (troops) neatly dressed in white shirts and pants, inspect the pumps and islands for cleanliness, and give praise to us when earned! He ran a tight ship and expected the best! He inspired me with his outstanding leadership and example! My brother, Ken, knew Bob and basically paved the way for me getting the job at Pride. As a result I knew Bob was a military pilot, and that became my goal! I worked a Pride Oil while attending the U, received my commission through Army ROTC, became an Army Aviator, and served a career in the Army. I send my condolences to Bob“s family and express my eternal gratitude to Bob for his inspiration

My sincere condolances to the Condie Family, wishing you all Peace at this time. I remember Bob vividly when I would come to the office with my father, Calvin E. Clark, when I was little. He would always greet me with a big smile. I remember him being so tall, hair perfect, dressed in levis and his boots. He always let me come in to look at the horse cutting pictures he had on the wall. He was an example for me of kindness and having passion in life! Again, sincere condolances to the Condie Family

So many great memories of our Mt Olympus association with the Condie family. Bob was a very special person who had a great positive influence on the lives of many. Our condolences to Chris, along with Shannon, Steven, Heather, and Robyn who each hold a special place in our hearts for many great experiences in earlier years.
It has been interesting to reflect on so many personal experiences we have shared over many years including church service where Bob contributed so much in enriching the lives of many. He was loved and respected by so many for his sincere care and concern and positive influence, and willingness to serve. He was an integral part our Wards High Priests group.
Thanks again to Chris and family for being a part of our lives.
Much Love, Connie and Allyn

We've been privileged to live in the neighborhood with Bob and Chris for many years. They are our choice friends. We are so grateful for their kindness to us. Bob has been a great example of a life well lived. In addition to his exemplary service to our country, his business prowess, and great family, he always had a very positive attitude. He showed sincere interest in and care for many people in our area. What a great man for whom we're most grateful. Carie and I send our love to Chris and the whole family.

I extend my best wishes to Bob's family. He and I flew together years ago and had lunch dates recently. He was a great man, and one of the best pilots I have ever flown with. We have lost a great man.

Over the last 10 years I have become good friends with Bob. We met through his friendship with my father, Gene. He helped us so much with our veteran events at our company, C. R. England. He was always very forward thinking and creative and he contributed greatly to our efforts to honor our veteran employees. Bob was a real patriot and entrepreneur. I learned a great deal from him and I miss him.

For many of my young adult years, Bob felt like a father to me. Generous and engaged with a watchful, caring eye over my activities. He would encourage me to find my passion and instilled in me a work ethic that has stayed with me to this day. Always there to guide me through the many challenges of my youth, he assisted me in finding summer employment while in high school and provided a safe and welcoming family life away from my home.
Unfortunately, and very sadly, due to many challenging and conflicting events, my close relationship with Bob ended many years ago. But I will always choose to remember the love that we had for each other.
My deepest and most sincere condolences to his wonderful children; Shannon, Steve, Heather, Robin and of course his beautiful and gracious wife Chris.
