Robert Steffey Obituary

Robert C. Steffey

1942-2026, A life well-lived

Born 12/6/42 in Long Beach, CA to Frank & Roberta Steffey. Checked out peacefully on 1/23/26 at age 83 from aggressive pancreatic cancer. Lived in Mexico, Arizona, and Australia before graduating from high school in Kobe, Japan. Educated at Stanford (BS) and Northwestern (MBA). Briefly married/divorced to Julie Jarvis after college. Successful and varied career at Exxon which included multi-year assignments in Colombia and Belgium, and extensive international travel. Retired at age 55 to Utah to join family and to enjoy the many outdoor activities here. Marathons, triathlons and century bike rides were among his many interests. Volunteered frequently at Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab. Devoted many enjoyable hours to Bridge, attaining Life Master status.

Bob was an awesome son, brother, and uncle. He was a friend to many with his helpful attitude, generosity, quick wit, and lively sense of humor. He viewed himself as a "relationship doctor." Although he will be sorely missed, leaving a blank in the lives of many, memories of Bob will never be forgotten. He is survived by brother Frank (& Vickie), niece Erin (& Nate, with children Logan and Madison), nephews Fernando (& Ashley) and Conor (& Juls) and fur bro Freddy.

What a fun person to be around! Remember when he carried the Andorran flag in the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics?

Bob and I met at the dog park and we bonded over our dogs for the next 24 years. From morning walks together to hiking, biking, a visit to Best Friends animal sanctuary and many, many dinners together, I always enjoyed my time spent with Bob. He loved to tease, which he immediately took upon himself to extend to my mom when she moved here to Utah. He went out of his way to make sure she adjusted to her new surroundings. I will miss Bob tremendously, he was a great friend.

I met Bob when he became an active bridge player in the SLC club. He was eager to improve his game and he became my mentee. He always wanted to receive prompt and accurate criticism with no sugar coating. He was a great pupil. At one point we were going to travel to New Zealand to participate in a bridge tour across that country. We were both excited, but unfortunately not enough people signed up for the cruise and it was canceled. I will miss his delightful observations about the myriad topics we would discuss.

Bob was always a friendly face at the Wellington. He often joked that people liked Freddy more than him. I assured him that wasn´t the case. He will be missed.

Bob was such a great friend to my Bob and myself! We loved his company over a glass of wine, dinner, or a bridge hand.
We visited him in Arizona and had a tour of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, where he volunteered.
We laughed together with Bob and other friends, enjoyed hearing about his travels with family, and always looked forward to our next get together!
He was a good man!
Thanks for the memories, Bob
