Roger Cornell Obituary
February 16, 1938 - October 28, 2024
La Jolla, California-Roger C. Cornell passed away on October 28, 2024, of natural causes. Roger Cornell was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, the son of Mary C Cornell and Elton F Cornell PhD. Summers were often spent at the family home in Brigham City, Utah.
Roger graduated from Punahou Academy in 1956. He attended Stanford University, receiving a BA in Biology where he was a Junior Phi Beta Kappa. Roger graduated from Stanford Medical School in 1964 and then interned at New York Hospital 1964-65. While at New York Hospital, Anthony Fauci was his student. Roger was drafted into the U.S. Air Force as a General Medical Officer (GMO) and he was stationed at Thule, Greenland, Germany and Vietnam.
Upon his return, Roger completed residencies in Internal Medicine at UCSD and Scripps Clinic. His 43-year career was spent at Scripps Clinic where he built an exemplary dermatology division as well as serving in many leadership positions.
Roger was Clinical Professor of Medicine and Dermatology at UCSD. He ranked and classified topical steroids that are still used today. Roger conducted a pivotal study of Accutane and Retinoid use in acne and psoriasis. He was the author of multiple scientific publications, book chapters and presentations.
Roger served on the Alliance Healthcare Board; Mingei International Museum Board of Trustees; Member San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture to name a few.
Roger was preceded in death by his sister Mary Elizabeth Gwilliam. He is survived by his two nieces Lisa M Gwilliam (and partner Ray Sweeten) and Jennifer A Nonnenmacher (and husband Tom Nonnenmacher) as well as his three grandnephews Lee Sweeten and Tyler and Trevor Nonnenmacher.
The family asks you to honor his life with a donation to Mingei Museum, 1939 El Prado, San Diego CA 92101.
Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at the Brigham City Cemetery, 300 East 300 South, Brigham City, Utah 84302.
Services entrusted to Myers Mortuary of Brigham City.
