Sam Singleton Obituary

1927 ~ 2016
Samuel Morris Singleton, age 89, passed away at his home in Ferron, UT, on Sat., November 26, 2016. He lived in the home built by his grandfather and namesake Samuel Singleton.
He was born October 19, 1927, in Ferron, where he grew up.
Sam served in the United States Army during the Korean War where he met his future wife, Alta Mae Brown, in Denver, Colorado. They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Sam was a life-long educator. He attended Carbon College and then graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in education. He pursued graduate studies at Kent State University and completed a master's degree from Utah State University. Sam taught school at South Emery High, Emery County High, and then served as principal at San Rafael Junior High. After his retirement, Sam was elected to the school board in Emery County and served from 2001 until the time of his death.
Sam was also a cattle rancher and farmer. He continued the legacy of his grandfather and father with the family farm. He loved working cattle and riding in the mountains and on the desert.
He loved serving others - especially senior citizens. He was constantly visiting the elderly at the nursing home and played in the senior citizen's band for many years. He helped care for his beloved wife, Alta, and sisters, Phyllis and Eleanore. He served as the county Republican Party chairman in the 1960's. He served as Bishop of the Ferron Ward in the 1970's. He was President of the Castle Valley Pageant from 1996 to 2003. He continued his church service up to the time of his death as the church organist. Sam was a gifted speaker and was called upon to speak at dozens of funerals during his life. He was also a member of the American Legion where he served in the honor guard for military funerals.
He was preceded in death by his father, Morris Samuel Singleton; his mother, Mary Elva "Mae" Huntsman Singleton; sisters, Roma S. Wakefield, Geniel S. Beach, Phyllis S. Stanton and Eleanore W. George. He is survived by his wife, Alta Mae Brown Singleton; sister, Colleen S. Jorgensen; sons, Morris (Celya) Singleton, Kyle (Kathy) Singleton and Myron (Janet) Singleton; and 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

I remember how kind he was to come to Milford and speak at my fathers funeral. I know he will be missed especially by his family, but also by the community and his church community where he served so faithfully.

He was a very nice man. You had many adventures I'm sure. You are in my thoughts. I have a map of Argentina and some bolos on my wall. I think about Argentina and my missionaries every day!
