Stanley Varner Obituary

1952 ~ 2018
Stanley Everett Varner, Sr. age 65, passed away on April 20th, 2018 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Stan was born in 1952 in Salt Lake City. He was the first of five children of Everett and Joan Varner. As a child and throughout his life, he was intently curious with a great desire to learn and create upon that knowledge. Growing up in the East Millcreek area, he also played football at Skyline High School, BYU, and in the NFL. In 1977 he was set up on a blind date by his lifelong best friend, Bruce Hansen (deceased), with Cydney Lyman. They were married on May 25th, 1978 in the Salt Lake City Temple and would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year. Throughout their 40 years together, they were always so touched and grateful for family, friends, generous acquaintances and strangers for their gifts of patience, kindness, understanding, and love.
He carried bricks for his father starting at the age of 4 and later became a 4th generation brick mason by trade and a general contractor. He built custom homes, commercial, and multi-family properties. He later took on several ventures in construction, business, and financial services. Stan was a polymath by trade who took great pride in his all of his work.
Stan was a devoted and loving son, husband, father, and grandfather. His children and grandchildren were his greatest pride and joy. He was a kind, honest, hard working, passionate, loyal, and tender hearted man. He was an avid reader who loved to learn and study. He was happiest when he was with his family and derived joy from having meaningful conversations, boating at Lake Powell, traveling, scuba diving, flying airplanes, and watching a movie with a big bowl of popcorn.
Within the depths of his soul, was an abiding and ever present love for Jesus Christ. Active in the LDS Church, his life experiences drew him towards deep introspection, study, and profound events that continued to direct him towards an abiding wisdom, inspired by the Savior's love for mankind. He encouraged everyone to become the very best that they were capable of becoming and spent much of his later years writing about the profound experiences and ideas that shaped his perspective. Stan believed that we are all children of God and was so grateful for the blessings that were bestowed upon him and his family now and always.
Stan is survived by his mother Joan Hunt Varner, his loving wife, Cydney, and his five children: Rachel Nielsen (Jayson), April Niu (Dusty), Stanley Varner Jr. (Alicia), Neal Varner, and Phillip Varner (Paris). He also has 10 grandchildren who adored him. He will be greatly missed.
We are so grateful for Mountain Point ICU doctors, nurses, and staff, Promise Hospital wound care team, physical therapy, nurses & staff, the Intermountain Medical Center 5th, 6th and the 12th floor doctors, nurses, intense physical therapy team and staff. Their love, care, and devotion was invaluable.
Funeral services will be held on Thurs., April 26th at 12:00pm at the Holladay 3rd Ward Chapel, 4568 S. Holladay Blvd in Holladay, Utah. Viewings will be held on Wed., April 25th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Holladay Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 S. Cyd and family, May we offer our sympathies at the passing of Stan. We loved him and his sly smile. He was a joker and always fun to be around! We were privileged to know him as a boy in East Mill Creek where we still reside. Could you please convey our condolences to his Mom, Joan Varner, our cherished friend. We are praying for all of you as we are serving a mission in the Philippines at the moment. The Church is true and we will all be together forever, is our testimony. We were so sad to hear the news. May God Bless you all.

Love you, President and Sister Moon (Richard and Marcia)
